I think the number one piece of property advice I would give to anyone coming to Tenerife is rent before you buy.
We arrived on the island last May for a week's holiday before making the final move in September. During that initial stay we fell in love with a house and started the mortgage application process.
Our timing was bad as the fall out from the Northern Rock crisis meant it was becoming increasingly hard to secure a mortgage (not helped by the fact that we already have a pretty hefty one on our London property).
The upshot was that we were refused a loan and decided to continue renting instead.
Ironically we have come almost full circle in that we are renting on the same complex where we saw the house we wanted to buy. Judging by what we have subsequently discovered here about the workmanship and the general lack of attention to detail, I am SO glad we decided not to pursue our original plan.
Irrespective of anything else, it's also extremely important to live for a while in a particular area to see whether it suits. |
