Looks like Tenerife got hit by the tail-end of tropical storm 'Bertha' - if you look at the past sequence at
Mid-Atlantic Weather Station's Hurricane/Tropical Storm Page you can see the tail of the storm over us - that would explain the high winds and VERY choppy seas over the last week.
