Even as the residents of Cho Vito are on hunger strike in a main plaza in Santa Cruz to save their homes, another Tenerife settlement is under threat. José Luis Langa, lawyer to the residents of Igueste de San Andrés, very picturesque village just north of Santa Cruz, said today that if Costas has its way, half of the dwellings (22 houses and 98 fincas) there will disappear. Sr Langa said that the area was settled centuries ago by the Guanches, but now letters have been sent out to the owners affected, whose properties lie in a 5 kilometre stretch between the El Burro and Antequera beaches, to tell them that their properties are too close to the coast and in violation of the 100 metre rule.

The lawyer argued that the coastal law shouldn't be applied to properties if they were shown to be in a "settlement", which was clearly how Igueste de San Andrés should be categorized since it had schools, a church, a cemetary, and residents who had lived there for many years.

Sr Langa has appealed to the courts and asked Santa Cruz Ayuntamiento for all the necessary documentation to enable him to prove that Igueste de San Andrés has been a municipal district for years, with a mayor, and all the facilities necessary for it to be classified as an established urban area. There will inevitably be a slight delay since this request was met by the Ayuntamiento sending out the documentation for the wrong areas, those of Almáciga and Taganana. JAA

A play area in Los Cristianos is plagued with fleas and other insects as a result of excessive dog mess left there by thoughtless owners. The play area has now been closed since even fumigation has not had an effect.

Residents are up in arms about the problem in Calle Noruega, the little road that runs alongside and above San Telmo and then around the bend and up the hill until it joins the main road just past where Blueberry Bobs used to be.

The news has now even been on the television, which will do the town no favours at all. Locals blame the general uncleanliness of children's play areas in the town, and the lack of lighting in this one in particular, but clearly the main part of the problem is down to the dog owners themselves, some because they don't clean up after them, and others because they simply let their dogs out to do their business unsupervised. JAA

The Guardia Civil, in an operation codenamed Anatolia, have had a huge success over the past few days with the breaking up of a group of Eastern Europeans operating in south Tenerife. The gang, composed of 3 Romanians and 2 Kosovans, all between 28 and 39 years of age, was planning to attack houses of the wealthy in Tenerife.

The gang's frightening plans arose from their frustration at the increased security put in place by businesses anticipating an attack in the wake of other robberies committed by the group in commercial premises. They are known to have carried out at least 16 burglaries over the last few months which netted them around €160,000 and jewellery.

With their profits decreasing, however, they were planning to raid dwellings with their wealthy owners at home, and to use a method they called "Boom Japca", a Romanian name indicating an assault of severe and extreme violence intended to ensure a rapid handover of money and items of value.

Given the way in which these thugs were operating, with hidden caches of clothes, hired cars, and fake IDs, let alone their propensity for extraordinary violence, this is a huge result for the Guardia Civil. It has not only cleared up a considerable number of robberies, but has also managed to pre-empt what appear to have been the most terrifying of plans for their future assaults. JAA

The spokesman of the residents of Cho Vito (Candelaria), Tomás González, announced earlier today an indefinite hunger strike to try to avoid the planned demolition of their houses. They are due to be destroyed on 20 September, which will add another 9 families, a total of 30 individuals, to the 23 properties demolished around 2 years ago by order of Costas.

The residents say they will only abandon their hunger strike if they get a letter signed by the four competent authorities guaranteeing their houses are safe from demolition.

These properties were saved from the 2008 demolition because they were the "sole dwellings" of the residents concerned. They were saved "until the residents should be relocated", which has not happened, said Sr González.

He reaffirmed the surviving residents' view that the application of the Ley de Costas was "arbitrary, retroactive, unjust, unbalanced, and capricious", and denounced the "grave irregularities of the whole demolition process from the outset".

"We are human beings, not terrorists", said Sr González, "and have the right to a dignified home and to be supported by the authorities".

The residents, however, have no confidence in these authorities, and recognize that their decision to go on hunger strike is going to be very hard.

The minimum age to ride motorbikes up to 50cc rises from 14 to 15 tomorrow. I must admit I always thought it was 15, but apparently not. The new minimum age is set by the reform, coming into force tomorrow, of the Reglamento General de Conductores, whose general provisions came into force last December.

Although youngsters of 14 will no longer be able to ride these bikes until they’re 15, they cannot, as previously, take pillion passengers until the age of 18. They must also pass both a theory test and a practical exam in a closed circuit.

The measure has been criticized by the motorcycle industry, as well as by motorcyclist associations, which have warned that if it comes to a choice of being able to ride a motorcycle of 50cc at age 15 or one of 125cc at age 16, consumers will probably opt to wait and buy a bigger bike, causing “drastic” losses to the industry. Industry insiders also quote the Greek example, where a similar measure caused an increase in accidents in new riders of larger bikes. JAA

Aqualand Costa Adeje has proudly announced the birth of a new baby dolphin. The baby, called Waka, is a female who was born last Friday, 27 August, in the dophinarium. She is the offspring of Gara, a 24-year-old dolphin who has given birth twice before. The calving was a complete success, Aqualand says, adding that it is the fifth birth in the centre in the last fourteen years, making Aqualand Costa Adeje one of the foremost centres for dolphin births in Europe.

The new arrival weighs 12 kilos and measures 1.10 metres long, is extremely active and in excellent health. It took just four hours for her to be suckling well and she is now swimming constantly alongside her mother.

Gara and her baby have been accompanied at all times by mum’s friend, the dolphin Yemaya and her own male baby Aitami, who was born last summer in the same park. As soon as little Waka and Gara herself are transferred to the principal pool, visitors will be able to see them both.

Aqualand Costa Adeje, along with Jungle Park, are the two attractions of the the Aspro Group in Tenerife. JAA

I posted recently on the temporary forum that Parque de la Reina was suffering a crime wave, and I hope we agreed that it was better to be aware than...

I posted recently on the temporary forum that Parque de la Reina was suffering a crime wave, and I hope we agreed that it was better to be aware than to try to deny what is happening in Tenerife right now. The details are HERE on my own website.

Now, too, police say that Abades is suffering the same, with 12 houses burgled even in the same street in the last 10 days.

The fact is, though, that Abades is just being used as an example, with the headline HERE reading "La isla de Tenerife sufre una oleada de robos" (Tenerife suffering wave of robberies).

Local Police chiefs throughout the island say they are overwhelmed by the numbers of denuncias for thefts that they have to deal with, not just of empty premises, but now very often of premises where the owners were at home and asleep. The capital is the area most affected by the crimewaves, but this is no longer a phenomenon that can be said to be restricted to any particular area of Tenerife.

We all need to maximise our personal and household security measures. Take extreme caution when out and about, especially when near cashpoint machines and banks, and when leaving or returning to a parked car. Don't leave doors and windows open overnight unless you have security grilles in place. Finally, make sure that you have insurance in place so that if the worst happens, you can at least recover something financially.

There has long been an expectation of a "social crisis" following in the steps of the economic one. It appears that it is here.
