my dad fought in WW11.. this woman should be ..?
A row has erupted in a village over claims a pub landlady refused to sell poppies from a tray on her bar ahead of Remembrance Day.
A staff member at The Windmill in the Weald, near Sevenoaks, Kent claimed the pub had received "threatening" phone calls in the wake of the saga and alerted police.
Weald parish councillor David Marchant, who went into the pub to hand out the poppy tray while delivering them round the village, told the Sevenoaks Chronicle: "I went into The Windmill and the lady was not at all keen to have them. A lot of the village are upset."
Publican and mother-of-two Bernice Walsh gave a different version of events and told the newspaper: "Well, I said they could put the poppies on the bar, and then he took them away."
A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "Officers attended today following a call from a member of the public at the premises reporting nuisance phone calls."
Both Mr Marchant and Ms Walsh declined to comment.
In a separate incident earlier this week, a Royal British Legion poster in Gillingham, Kent, urging the public to support this year's Poppy Appeal was defaced to attack former prime minister Tony Blair.

But hang on, does the original item say that the landlady agreed to put them on the counter?
The "man" reporting this is a councillor. I for one would not believe a word he "REPORTS".....
Surely, although perhaps distasteful, this is a free Country and if the lady DID deny permission to allow the tray to be displayed, surely this is her right, which is what many many people faught for.
I don't believe this article is as clear cut personally.
Oh, and by the way, a already have purchased my poppie this (NOTE: THIS) year.

This is the problem, isn't it? We don't really have enough information to judge whether she was being reasonable or not. The councillor might have another agenda such as closing down the pub. You just don't know.

My Father spent 6 years fighting with the 8th Army mainly in the African Desert. To me he was a hero, alongside all of the other people who fought in the WW2. Poppy Day is a fitting tribute to all fought in one capacity or another in WW2.
But I am not in favour of anyone making threatening phone calls, as seems to be the case concerning this particular pub landlady. It is disappointing that for whatever reason she refused to put the tray of poppies on the bar for sale. But that is her choice wrong as it may seem to some people...myself included.
But to begin intimidation tactics like making threatening phone calls is wrong. What's next...a petrol bomb through the window? If people local to the pub believe that the landlady is wrong, well as already mentioned, they should boycott the pub.

The only difference I can see is in the word "Sell". Was the Councillor requiring her to do more than just have them on the bar. She'd agreed to that, so what else did he want? What exactly was it that she was refusing to do? Did he want her to sell them actively rather than just have them there for people to buy? Did he want a cut ... ?
I'd like some clarity, because it's possible that the "how disgusting" title might actually be applicable to the supposed hero of the story!
I mean, I am 100% behind the RBL's appeal, but surely it was her right to choose to support it and intimidation of any kind to anyone is a "NO-NO" in my book.
Especially from a councillor who nearly always have a hidden agenda.
