Hey FLoSSie, before this turns into a diatribe against the UK government (who by the way passed legislation last night to ratify The Lisbon Treaty) can I suggest you to link to your source (it´s the BBC, I think)
Associated Press have started complaining (see here) about excessive use of its articles by websites & blogs as it breaches copyright, and I am sure other media outlets will soon follow suit.

I agree with you Doreen. All such postings should give credit to their source. Often the source helps people to do further research and also decide credibility.
I am also amazed at the amount on plagiarism that occurs on all forums. Taking someone's work and tweaking the text to give the impression that it is is their own original submission.
I think this subject probably needs a thread of its own.

This thread has been started in response to several valid comments regarding the copying and passing off of others articles and comments on fora such as ours.
There was an article a few days ago in The New York Times (see here) which reported that Associated Press were starting to complain about excessive use of their articles on various websites and blogs. I quote:
The A.P.’s effort to impose some guidelines on the free-wheeling blogosphere, where extensive quoting and even copying of entire news articles is common, may offer a prominent definition of the important but vague doctrine of “fair use,” which holds that copyright owners cannot ban others from using small bits of their works under some circumstances. For example, a book reviewer is allowed to quote passages from the work without permission from the publisher.
I think as a forum, we need to be careful to always quote our sources and I suppose we will have to work out just how large "small bits" can be It has certainly made me think about how much I can quote from a grammar book when posting in the Spanish Language section.

I write original articles for various sites all over the world. They all point out that the articles must pass copyscape and the articles are always checked.
Go to the above link, and paste in the address of any page, on any site that you are viewing. Copyscape will then search the web, and see if there are "copies" on other sites.
I just checked my own website, as I haven't done so for ages. I'm pleased to report that it's still all original.
If you own a web site, you can download a "copyscape banner" I used something like this, it makes people aware that you will be checking for plagiarism.

My guess is that if your quotation is a quite specific point of grammar and that you identify your source, this is not plagiarism and the author will indeed be pleased because it is good publicity for the book as being authoritative.

In my opinion, a good post is an original comment on a subject, but with stated facts backed up with a source link.
No need to post extensive quotes to bolster your opinion's "authority" IMO.

[.. identifying your source] is all that is needed to avoid plagiarism. Nothing else.
Yes, but we also need to be mindful of copyright - perhaps we should add it into the title of the thread too. If you read the article in The New York Times, AP were complaining about quoting part of an article between 39 and 79 words words - at maximum little more than this post and it´s quotation.
