Here's the story.
I need a new Gazebo and have tried everywhere in the South to no avail. Signman offered to come with me to Leroy Merlin next to Ikea in La Laguna today. Off we went only to find disappointment. The place was mobbed (just like an Xmas eve in Asda). They had the one I need on display for €139. None in stock I was told. Come back in a week.
I was not happy with the dismissive attitude I got so I asked someone else. Same reply but he went online and checked for stock elsewhere. He told me they had 14 in stock in La Orotava. After a brief visit to Ikea for a few things we set off for La Orotava (with me quietly expecting disappointment).
Take the TF5 past Puerto de la Cruz and leave at junction 36. You can't miss Leroy Merlin. What a surprise. The place is huge but much quieter than La Laguna. The Gazebos were in stock but in the sale at that branch for €99

What a result. Really friendly helpful staff too
Happy now we decided to check out the Al Campo centre over the road. Again what a surprise. It's even bigger than the one in La Laguna and there are a myriad of different shops in the same mall. Right next door is another huge shopping centre with loads of unusual shops.
I'll be giving La Laguna a miss in future and doing the extra 20 minutes onto La Orotava. Much more choice, friendlier staff and fewer crowds.
On leaving we decided to take the scenic route home through Icod de los Vinos and El Tanque. Signman had never stopped off in Icod before so we pulled in and had a wander. We looked at
the tree and the church then had a coffee in the square. It was cloudy and there was a cool breeze. It's the first time I've felt cool in weeks.

It was really refreshing to feel a cool wind.
So. If you are heading up north for shopping maybe allow some extra time and go to La Orotava instead. You will be really glad you did. Make a day of it and come back via one of the scenic routes, either through El Tanque and Santiago del Teide or up through the Orotava valley and across the Teide national park.
It's well worth it
