WOW - I can't believe how much we have been quoted for car hire!!
Mrs H and I are out in 3 weeks time and require car hire.
We have always used the same company (Autoreisen) and up to now they have always been very competitive. OK, their cars are possibly not as new as others in the market place but they were the best prices.
Last night I tried to book a car and their prices have shot up!!
My Father is currently paying €131.43 for 11 days car hire in October/November (very cheap I know) but they now want to charge me €202.25 for 12 day car hire during November/December.
What a price hike.
I have emailed them regarding this new price structure and their reply was:

Sorry but we cannot offer you a better price.
Maybe the next time you need a car we will have better prices.
Best regards

I read recently that so many rental companies in the Canaries had gone bust or given up, that there was now an overall shortage of rental cars. On some islands (Las Palmas, I think) you have to book your car months in advance.
Or perhaps it is another symptom of the Canarian mentality, that with doing less trade, you put the prices up to compensate.

actually I think its the other way around, with more companies setting up shop in the past we have had overcapasity for some time (as with plane tickets in the past), and hence the prices outside High season events (try getting a rental car in Easter) were VERY low compared with other areas.
200€ for 12 days is not bad, do the calculation per day...
