Default How can I get rid of cat smell?

I look after an apartment where the previous tenants had a cat against the rules. I don't know whether the smell of the cat is so penetrative due to the humidity problems that the apartment used to have or because, well, it really left such a bad smell. Nobody is going to take the apartment; the smell is vile. Any suggestions what could be done against it? (Other than destroying the whole apartment, of course...)

Here are a few home remedies that some people have found useful:

Vinegar and Baking Soda - First soak up as much of the urine as you can, then soak the area with a mixture of 1/3 cup of white vinegar with 2/3 cup of water and a little soap. With a clean rag, soak up any excess liquid pressing firmly and repeatedly until dry. Repeat this process using fresh water, and then use another rag to soak up the remaining liquid. After this, sprinkle some baking soda on the area and vaccuum up in 24 hours.

Peroxide - Some people claim peroxide works well in cleaning up cat urine and stains, though this can be tricky on surfaces which might discolor easily. Supposedly, peroxide breaks down the components in the cat urine which cause stains and odor. Pour a small amount directly on the area and allow to dry. Then rinse with warm water and soak up with a rag or paper towel.

Listerine Mouthwash - A number of people claim this helps eliminate cat urine odors when a few drops are added to your water & vinegar solution, or when mixed with a peroxide solution. It can also be mixed with just hot water and dabbed on the area. Most likely this is because of the amount of alcohol in Listerine.

Had a good scout on the internet, then spoke to my mum. She says that 1part vinegar and 3 parts water does the trick, just clean the smelly areas with it

Without carpets, this sounds as though it could have been a tomcat spraying. The smell can be truly awful ...

They tend to spray things that absorb the scent, so it could be difficult to get rid of if this is what it is unless you just get a good tomcat spray odour remover ... any decent pet shop should have some.

yeah, the apartment has no carpets at all, and of course, the floors have been cleaned with ordinary bleach... which had no effect at all!
i'll have a look in a good pet shop next week and hope i can get something for the smell; if not, i'll try one of the other suggestions

I think Janet is right, cats would cut their own paws off rather than mess in the house BUT Tom cats do spray to mark their 'scent' the odour is dreadful, it will be on the walls, sofa sides, on the side of beds etc. to try cleaning about bottom height & a little higher to the average cat siz. You should get where the little devil has done it.

I do not envy you at all, a disgusting job
