Default Climate change and the Canaries

The process of climate change in the Canaries over coming decades is "totally irreversible", and will cause an increase in temperatures regardless of what we do. This is a plain statement of fact, according to the Met Office, from analysis of the latest joint AEMET-Government studies on climatological prediction. The Government side, for its part, emphasized that it is no longer a case of putting anything off, but adapting to the inevitable.

The effects to come can be summarized as follows:
  • unprecedented temperature highs
  • rise of annual mean temperature
  • warming of the hitherto cool coastal waters
  • increase in sea level
  • more frequent tropical storms
  • heatwaves

Main areas of concern in practical and strategic terms are torrential rains, which can cause flooding and overflowing of barrancos; gale force winds; heatwaves in summer and intense calimas in winter (January to March); meteorological depressions and tropical storms (like Delta).

The actual expected rise of up to 2 degrees C doesn't sound like a lot, but the effects will be considerable, it appears.

Mate you could be surfing one BIG wave, from here to the East Coast of America

The Latitude were are here is also supposed to be the area least affected by climate change, so looks like the rest of the worlds in for a bumpy ride also

global warming is scary. but what is so much scarier is that we don't think of it as something that will seriously affect us, in our life-time... just think what people in 200-300 years will be going through

Those effects have been happening over a few years in TFS. No one used to have air-con in Tenerife 10 years ago, and I remember when people used to wear Summer clothes all year round. You never needed electric blankets in Winter.

To be honest I thought it was nice to have the change in temps throughout the year, and the rain was always welcome.

From the long-term Hadley centre studies, the average temperature in the Eastern Atlantic at these latitudes should be relatively stable in the face of rocketing African temperatures.

We'll get our share of extreme weather, I expect - and imagine the calimas to come!

I think this is what scares me the most in global terms, that whatever effects we feel, we'll be getting off lightly compared to what's going to happen elsewhere. Whatever instability is apparent here will be nothing compared to the extremes to be felt elsewhere.

I agree with Chip that it's rather nice to feel there's something akin to seasons here, but like Cornflake, my heart sinks when I think of future generations.
