Default Suicide in Germany.

I did not know that suicide in Germany is legal..not that the person who is taking that step is bothered..but on the news yesterday, apparently someone is being charged with assisting a suicide..or as they have said.."Assisting in Euthinasea"..debatable?..I suppose there could be a concern that the person "Assisting" could well have been murdering the person about to die.

I think it's the same in the UK pointless being a crime if the criminal is dead. But it is an offence to 'aid and abet' suicide

Jack Kevorkian, aka Doctor Death, did much to argue for assisted euthanasia and claimed to have helped over 100 people to die in the States. I have just googled his name to see that he himself is now dying (in prison charged with second degree murder after a televised assisted suicide). As he now applies for parole, so he too may die in dignity ....

"He did what he did, and it brought it to public awareness [of physician-assisted suicide]," said Kevorkian's attorney, Mayer Morganroth. "He now realizes that having performed it when it was against the law, wasn't the, probably, appropriate way to go about it. … What he should have done was work towards its legalization verbally. … Pursuing that cause, and not performing it because it still was against the law."

I believe that euthanasia should be legalized..people should have the right to "Die with Dignity" if they so wish, by way of euthanasia..obviously there would have to be strict guidelines and procedures in place, to counter any attempt to use this method to bring about the death of...let us say a rich relative..who may be terminally ill but does not want to depart this world at that particular moment in time.

I know if it were myself, and I had a terminal illness..and that each day brought more pain and suffering to myself and my loved ones..I would like to have the choice of wether or not to suffer on to the inevitable end..over the years I have witnessed members of my family die slowly and painfully with cancer..I believe if that option had been available..they would have taken it.

Totally with you on this one. As life expectation improves and (as all current studies suggest) quality of life deteriorates the law on this will have to be tackled.

I agree too ... we would not stand by and watch an animal suffer, and the law is perfectly amenable to putting it "out of its misery". Moreover, we would be castigated if we did actually allow it to suffer. I don't see why humans shouldn't have the same opportunity for dignity, especially when it's in the name of human primacy.

i agree with mazoka, too! the whole thing should be legalised - there can't be anything worse than dying a slow and painful death and not being allowed to end it all to spare yourself the suffering when that's what it will lead to anyway.

There is an article here pointing out that in 10 years time, over half the population will be over 50, and that large numbers of pensioners can look forward to 30 years of retirement. For some, however, this can be a lingering death over decades and we need new legislation for people to determine their own end at a time they think appropriate.

Not if pensionable age continues to rise as it has
