It seems that Yang's uneven teeth, while unremarkable in a seven-year-old, were considered potentially damaging to China's international image.

The European and American people are very concerned that a young Chinese girl has been “used” but the Chinese would not look at it this way.

Yang Peiyi knows that pretty Lin Miaoke would not have been able to sing at the opening ceremony without her.

All that needs to happen is that the world should not forget Yang Peiyi who may be a very big singing star in the future. Her voice may last longer than Lin Miaoke looks but both girls will be held in high esteem by their country.

What is sad is that the Americans and Europeans who feel sorry for Yang will probably forget her within weeks remembering the pretty face of Lin, but such is life.

This may upset a small number of people it isn’t meant to but it is important that we see things in many ways, it’s part of being diverse.

The world outrage and indignation at the faking of a few fireworks is unbelievable.

In the grand scheme of life and in the context of sporting achievement during the Games this should mean nothing. It filled a gap in the proceedings allowing the audiences mind to be taken from Tiananmen Square to the Bird’s Nest Stadium and setting the “scene”.

I for one was glad they hadn’t wasted anymore natural resources.

The Western World are constantly looking to find fault with the Chinese and the 2008 Games and it is no wonder that the Chinese have tried to prevent any “fault” being evident hence they substitute a pretty girl in the role of singing "Ode to the Motherland".

We rarely look at situations from the other side; we constantly try and force our “values” on others. Perhaps we would prefer the Chinese to spawn a host of lager louts and football hooligans to shout and insult everyone within earshot.

The Chinese have a vastly different culture and due to this they are “different” I only hope they do not become too Westernised too soon.

Just as a side not, I think my 'ironic post' was more to do with my unease at the current 'games' that is set to cost $20 BILLION in a country where there are people that still have nowhere to live since the earthquake and where many are starving.
The London Olympic Committee are looking to have RAP artists featuring at the opening ceremony to show the world how diverse our population is

It seems it was a French Chinese who made the switch
Quote
“The reason why little Peiyi was not chosen to appear was because we wanted to project the right image. The reason was for the national interest,” said Chen Qigang, the renowned contemporary composer and French citizen who directed the music for the opening ceremony.

“The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feelings and expression. Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects but in terms of voice Yang Peiyi is perfect.”

Yes. I'm all for recognising cultural differences. One of the motives of the Olympics for all nationalities is to achieve perfection.
But these are two little girls. How do they and their families really feel?

We'll never really know, Yang has talked to the press saying she is the "voice" and she is happy with that.

I could see her making the best of it since she can only gain from a "little" publicity.

I believe the choice was made to appease the Western Media and is because of the increasing Westernisation of China.

Remember Europeans don't adopt ugly children and we only want to see "stars" who are beautiful.

i do not know where you get your information from regarding Europeans not adopting ugly children, do you have any facts to support that assertion, i think not. In any event better to support a few children than consign female babies to the bin as they do in China.

Yes i have watched many TV programmes on it, which is just as reliable as your source of information, i also know several Chinese people.
i think you would find in both cases, yours and mine, the claims are exaggerated!
