Default Idioms/Sayings English to Spanish

I have always been fascinated with how sayings differ from language to language, so thought I would start a thread with a few

The first one is for ollyvee

a stitch in time (saves nine) una puntada a tiempo ahorra ciento
(yes, puntada is stitch but they need 100)

to put all your eggs in one basket poner toda la carne en el asador
(putting all the meat on the grill/spit)

a friend in need is a friend indeed en el peligro se conoce el amigo
(literally, in danger you know a friend)

Anyone have any more to add?

This will be a really useful thread. Idioms are strange because translated they usually mean nothing at all.

At the end of a day's work:

Con esto un bizcocho hasta mañana a las ocho, literally "with that a cake until tomorrow at 8"

I like these ....

you can’t teach an old dog new tricks loro viejo no aprende a hablar
You know what a loro is - think Loro Parque ... an old one won´t learn to speak/talk

talk of the devil …(and the devil appears) hablando del rey de Roma....... (y él que se asoma)
(okay, who's good on history as to why it is the King of Rome?)

Rome wasn't built in a day no se ganó Zamora en una hora.
(I think we need a thread on Spanish history - Zamora was a battle, not won in an hour)

Antes que te cases mira lo que haces. (Before you marry look what you do.)

Look before you leap.

Live and let live / There's nothing so queer as folk
Hay de todo en la vina del Senor (lit. there is/you find everything in the wine of the Lord)

It's a question of swings and roundabouts What you lose in / on the swings, you gain in the roundabouts
Lo que se pierde en una casa se gana en otra (lit. what you lose in one house you gain in another)

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst
Procura lo mejor, espera lo peor y toma lo que viniere
(they add - and take what comes)

Oops - got that one wrong - should be la viña
Hay de todo en la viña del Senor - vineyard of the Lord - certainly makes more sense!!

(la viña is also vine)
