BBC Languages - Learn Spanish - Mi Vida Loca Click on the above link to come to a new video series ... just watched episode one - set in Madrid - seemingly in the 22 episodes, a crime thriller will evolve, ending in The Canaries. Very much aimed at beginners, but a good revision exercise for lower intermediates too if you click on the Spanish subtitles.

And while you are on the BBC Language website, check out this section http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/cool/ Cool Spanish - in other words Slang Lots of groups of words/phrases with sound ... and I was delighted to find some substitutes for joder -will wait to see if people crack up when I use them Jopé, jopelines, jolines, jolín (*) These are a few euphemisms to replace joder. They're usually used by children or adults who want to avoid swearing.

This BBC language site looks really good. Although I speak moderate Spanish (still plenty of room for improvement), it is my comprehension that sometimes lets me down. Sometimes it is just that I miss the endings of verbs or don’t concentrate enough. Or because I don’t recognize a key word or it is being used in a different way or with a less common meaning, then I am lost for several sentences. It is a case of mentally keeping up as much as polishing up my verbs and extending my vocabulary! So I think this site is going to be a big and fun help. Does anyone have any tips though with regard to improving comprehension? Obviously, I need to increase my exposure to Spanish. With few neighbours though, no TV and poor radio reception it isn’t the easiest thing. Although I do put on a DVD in Spanish when I am ironing! I know what is happening in the film even if I haven’t seen it in English before but I really couldn’t translate it for you. Maybe I just need to iron more!

I found an item in a shop in the UK, years ago when I was learning, before I came over to live. It is called a Verb Wheel. It is a cardboard circular thing which you can slide around to the correct tense etc and the verb endings etc were there to see. It was a wonderfully easy way to learn. Another method I used was word association, which I discovered in a book in WH Smiths. Finally, to aid by vocabulary, I used post it notes around the house with the spanish words written on them. When I opened the oven, I would repeat the word that was written on the door. This was a really helpful way to learn. Every time I found that I didn't ned the post it note anymore, I would wrie a new one for another item.

Read it quick! The BBC Have been criticised recently for its 'too large non programming budget'. Their Internet site received a special mention as more than 50% of its hits come from abroad. Result... Budget slashed, Staff re-structured, Site to be massively scaled down.
