They never do that with me, probably because they don't have the faintest idea what I'm trying to say.

What I do find is that when I speak Spanish in a group of Spanish women (as I have to do in committee meetings) they never used to take me seriously. One of them explained that even when I was angry it never came across because I never used the right swearwords. Now I just bang the table and shout joder. Then they just laugh.

It's true! He came home very flustered one evening and said that he thought he'd been really emphatic, and even angry, and was worried that he'd upset the committee. It was as they were leaving, and he was explaining this to the Vice President, that he learned that they'd all thought he'd been completely polite ... and they were wondering why he wasn't more agitated about the issue ...!!

I can make myself understood even when I get stuck as I use my hands alot when I talk, I couldn't do without them and the Spanish/Canarian also use their hands alot when they talk

I think they always look angry when they are in conversation as their hands are all over the place

I find that by far the most useful word to use with Canarians is oooooph with a shoulder shrug. This means anything too big to measure. So they say this house must be worth oooooph or the paperwork needed to do this legally is ooooph

Shoulder shrug is not quite right. It is a lifting of the arm, hands palm downwards, with a flick of the wrist upwards as if you were throwing something over your shoulder with the back of your hand.
