| I learned Castillian at University and spent time living in the heart of Castilla y Leon, so for me the Spanish with the "th"s is the only Spanish and although I have now lived longer in Tenerife than I lived on the mainland, I just could not bring myself to adopt the Canarian pronunciation. It would be like putting on a cockney accent when I'm in London or going to Texas and adopting a drawl. I don't care if some Canarians do shake their heads at me, I would be so embarrassed if I ever moved back to Castilla and starting talking with "s"s - it was bad enough when I was in Madrid and made reference to the "guagua" ![]() |

) so why shouldn't I be equally proud to make my best attempts at "King's Spanish", wherever in Spain I may be! ![]() |

| I put this in this thread because I have only heard the terms - I have no idea of the spelling! So, phonentically.. The term for a golf bandit is "Tábado" (or in French, "le Plonkir") Learned this a a Los Palos golf tournament the other day!

| I have to admit that as I never learnt Spanish at school I find the local/South American accent easier. Saying things like 'thervetha' never did come easy!! A few months ago I heard an explanation on the radio that the 'th' for c and z came about because one of the Kings has a lisp and his court tried not the make him sound silly! It's almost believable; after all it is said that Americal English is closer to the original that English English. ![]()
