Default Is one area worse than another for Cockroaches?

The dreaded cockroach

We will hopefully soon be looking for accommodation to rent long term and wondered if there any areas worse than anothers for cockroaches - please, only sensible and serious responses as the little and sometimes huge horrors make my skin creep.

We have an apartment on Parque Santiago but do not have a problem there but we wont be living in it.

Your help will be appreciated.

They get less prolific the higher up you live generally.

Newer more modern complexes also seem to have less but again that is not always the case. Check to see if a complex has regular treatment. The drains all get gassed on ours regularly and in over 2 years we only had one cockroach in the house.

Ive not seen any in my house in El Medano. Ive only seen one big dead one in the garden but I think the cat might have abducted that one from somewhere.

That's because the complex is run well. But seriously, Duderock is probably right by saying the higher up you are the better, and the newer the building the better. Another factor is the effectiveness of the community in having regular gassing - we have a regular contract, and they come and gas everything as and when we report a problem (i.e. one cockroach)

Agree with Dave. They're very unusual, if not non-existent, at altitude. The question is where "altitude" starts. They are an issue for most residents because very few live high enough to avoid them completely. They are present at the top of Torviscas Alto, for example.

The real question, therefore, is whether a complex carries out regular treatment. As Dave says, it is done regularly on ours, and they are not an issue (except just after the treatment when one or two come staggering out and die horribly ... serves them right ).

The key word to ask about is desratización. Strictly speaking, it's rodent control, but it's also used for the gassing treatment for roaches. Ask around in a proposed complex if anyone knows if it's done; ask to see the last annual accounts ... it should be an item on the expenditure.

And watch out for plugholes bunged up with soap in the bathroom, or grilles covered up with sellotape ... guess what we learned the hard way when we first moved over

I don't like them but I don't see how it serves them right
