Perhaps some people feel that just being smart is not sufficient for them. An academically gifted child should not be deprived of the opportunity to pursue something academic, just because being smart is sufficient to earn a living. Perhaps the child might think there is more to life.

My children are very academic but I believe a combination of being "book smart" and "street smart" is the key to their future success.

In our house no subject is taboo or off limits and we debate all and sundry about life, the universe and everything. The children do jobs around the house and I am already teaching them life skills for their future.

When Jake goes to university he'll be able to clean the house (whether he does or not is a different matter), iron his clothes, cook, budget his money and probably drive a car. Above all he will have learned to be a decent human being and a good friend and partner with a strong work ethic.

I can't predict the future for the children. All I know is we are doing our job to equip them with the tools for life. The rest is up to them.

Despite our interference...

I have two kids. Both were born here and go to a Spanish state school. I am happy with their development so far. At 7 my eldest is fluent in English and Spanish and soaks up French from her visiting cousins like a sponge. The littlest, at 4, is in the pre-school and doing great in there.

Family when they visit and come with me to pick the kids up are charmed by the obvious affection between child and teacher. There is always a kiss and cuddle for the little ones before they go off home. I like that.

You can have all the education in the world. Have the walls full of framed pieces of paper telling everyone how clever and educated you are.
But if you haven't got the brains to use that knowledge, it becomes a complete waste of time, effort and money.
It's not what you have, it's what you do with it.

In my humble opinion (kicked out of school age 15)

Don't know if any of you watched the American version of "The Apprentice" with Donald Trump. Can't remember what season is was but he pitched the "book smart" and the "street smart" against each other. Week after week the book smart fell by the wayside.

As a parent it is my responsibility to ensure my children receive a decent education, but it is essential I teach them how to think on their feet in this thing we call life. All the degrees in the world won't do that!
