| Perhaps you can explain what you mean by "rich culture" and what this offers people living here in terms of cultural activities?

| I didnt realise we were talking about activities. I meant culture in general. All countries have culture and tradition. Tha canary islands have a very interesting history, historical connections with south america, unique local accent and vocabulary, the guanches, lucha canaria, food, music. Like the rest of spain, when you have loads of people all wanting to stay at the same spot and have bacon and eggs, that spot becomes little england, hence no culture (no offence, i just mean it becomes a plastic version of what they get at home. At least at home they have real english culture around them. On holiday they get neither one culture nor the other, its just "holidayland" where spanish is just like english except that you just add an "o" at the end of every word). In other words, many people dont go there for cultural activities (they could but they dont) or to sample the authentic lifestyle of the country, so because of demand, a little bubble gets creates for them, offering exactly what they came for. If they want culture, they could go into the small (and not so small) towns around the island, or they could go to Santa Cruz where there are museums / the auditorium etc, they could find out about the jazz festival, the carnival (the 3rd largest in the world, and it makes the notting hill carnival look like a total joke) or they could learn spanish and understand what the locals are saying and find out what else is going on. Theres more to Tenerife than PDLA / LC. Thats just a playground to entertain foreigners. |

BUT what you are not recognizing is the need of people who live here. You talk about getting out of the tourist resorts as though you think we all live in them. We don't! Most of us live in the very towns and villages you are talking about. Do you really think we all live in the middle of Torviscas? Why not read the forum a bit more thoroughly. You will see many threads on us and our activities, and realize that all your comments have been said many times before. I doubt I'll be the only one to find your comment that "Theres more to Tenerife than PDLA / LC" to be more than just a bit patronising. As far as going to Santa Cruz is concerned, there aren't that many museums there, and it is in the south of Tenerife that most of us live, and it is in the south that the Cabildo has notably failed to provide any, apart from the small ones which are often closed or ill supplied in the smaller towns and villages. Most Tenerife residents are also on low wages, so going up to a concert involves relatively high ticket prices and transport to the north. The Carnaval? Yes we do know about it, and we know it's the second biggest in the world! There's a thread on it somewhere if you care to look ... but it's just once a year! As far as "they could learn spanish and understand what the locals are saying and find out what else is going on" is concerned ... many of us do try to learn Spanish. This is why we have an entire Spanish section on this forum. Perhaps you hadn't seen it yet, but it might be better to familiarise yourself with the forum before sounding off ..... I'm sorry if this has come over as aggressive, it's not meant to be ... but you have come over as extremely condescending and patronising. Edit: sorry, Black Flag, typing at the same time ![]()

| Talking about culture, I for one am pining to go to the theatre, to see a proper play. Where can I go? I live in South Tenerife - do I need to fly to Madrid for the weekend and see one there? If there are theatres in the north of the island, they don't even advertise down here in the south, and then I'd still have the transportation and overnight costs so I may as well go to Madrid or Barcelona. Even the cinemas in Tenerife show American films dubbed into Spanish, why can't they show some of the many brilliant Spanish films instead?!! |

| there's the teatro de guimera... but surprise, surprise, all the plays are in spanish. there are other theatres but again, everything is in spanish. i guess that's one of the things where we foreigners have to immerse into the spanish language if we want to go. fair enough. i agree with the cinema bit, though. even in other countries they show a lot of films in the original with subtitles, and it should be the same here! | I don't mind the plays being in Spanish (they would be in Madrid too ) Where are the theatres and do they show any big productions or are they more local amateur groups? |
