pelinor: I'll never join you!

9PLUS: If you only knew the power of the dark side. Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father.

pelinor: He told me enough! He told me you killed him.

9PLUS: No. I am your father.

pelinor: No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!

9PLUS: Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

pelinor: No! No! No!

9PLUS: pelinor. You can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and we can rule the galaxy as father and son. Come with me. It's the only way.

pelinor: Neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Janet :

Different people have different ways of communicating. What sounds to you like rejecting is in reality me simply having a dialogue. I question everything that i think needs questioning, and i believe in second opinions. Thats just my way and im old enough to know that it works for me. It may not be your style but its mine. For all you know i could be coming to terms with what im being told. Maybe i am, and maybe im still genuinely questioning what im told, or maybe its a bit of both, and maybe im even doubting the accuracy of some of what im told and i need to know for sure from someone else. And maybe im literally writing down all that im being told and then trying to find a solution nonetheless.

So if i say i cant believe it, that means : Wow, really? Tell me more. Convince me. I need to feel that its that way rather than just intellectually accepting it. You have your womans intuition, im surprised you arent relating to this. And living in another country, you should know that different people have different attitudes to conversation. Its just chit chat, with hopefully something for me to learn along the way.

Because its one thing to say oh well thats the way it is, and its another to dig deeper just in case theres more to know. Its just conversation, let me do it my way.

What's good:
-seeing the sea every day.
-having a great opportunity to meld into another culture & learn another language (although I must add that most expats really don't take advantage of it enough)
-the good life (cheap wine & olive oil).
-getting by with less stuff.
-less violent crime (although it is on the rise)

What's not good:
-not being able to escape the extremely high population density (400+ people/km²)
-generally not having enough money & having to ration the milk for example.
-the distance from your family, friends & relatives.
-lately, the notion that Spain is confronting a severe economic crisis.
-last but not least - the local drug epidemic (hashis and cocaine mainly)

All of which is brought about by your own individual circumstances....... I experience none of the above

I'm not the only one... I think these points are certainly worthy of mentioning. They're for the most part measurable.

* Tenerife DOES have a lot of people living on it. If Tenerife was a country it'd be the 20-24th on the list of most populated countries (depends on the number of tourists present, up to 500/km²). It's well ahead of Japan in terms of average population density...

* You only have to look around at all the people driving Seat Marbellas & Pandas to realise that -in general- there simply isn't as much money here as other places. Having said that, there are certainly unique opportunities to be found (or created).

* While it's certainly true that I am further from my family than most (they live in OZ), you're looking at a 3-4 hour flight to get back to the UK. No denying that.

* Regarding the last two points, read the local papers. The crisis is mentioned every single day on Spanish national TV. The construction industry is caput. I'll admit that I know bugger-all about economics, but clearly the IBEX took a big slide this year. It was at one of its highest points between Nov 1 & December 11, 2007 (~15,800). The index is now at 11,200. That's a 30% drop.

* Almost every time I read the papers, there's been a coke shipment intercepted. Probably has something to do with strong ties between South America & the Canary Islands. Spain has one of -if not the highest- rates of cocaine use in the whole of Europe. Hash? Morocco, the prinicpal producer, is right next door. Look around. Gawd they even smoke it in some cafes & bus stations.

I can find negative things about any place, including my home country. I'm just not living under any idealistic delusions like Tenerife is some wondrous magical island where everything is bloody perfect for everyone. Whether you agree or not, I've included these additional points for the benefit of people who might not have thought of these things.
