At the end of the day, price is not the overriding issue - can you get cover in clinics and hospitals near where you live adn with DKV you do not pay upfront, the bills are passed to the company.
Same as Sanitas.

I know the European Heath Card covers emergencies but what about none emergency matters.
You could always get Travel Insurance - policies for over 60s can be obtained with full medical cover. See our Daddy's web site for details - Policy in English, by English underwriters and full cover for just about all eventualities, including hijacks!

The problem with this is that it does not cover you if you are a resident in Tenerife. This is the most common error that people make thinking they can get much cheaper travel insurance from a UK company.
the following is a quote from the terms and Conditions :

Residency You must have lived in the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Eire for at least six of the last 12 months before you bought or renewed your policy.

BEWARE forum members!!!

Maybe somebody else could could clarify, but as far as I am aware, if you live in tenerife for more than 181 days then you are considered to be resident here in Tenerife.

We've had reports of people going back to UK and trying to use their "local" doctor only to be asked where they live. The doctors are being forced by UK government to enforce the law relating to treatment ( probably because of the weakness of the economy in the UK) , so I say again, beware forum members if you take out travel insurnace from a company on the web, read their small print in the Terms and conditions which very often state you must be a British Resident and start and end your trip in the UK - this excludes people resident in Tenerife.

I believe doctors are being asked to police this situation and weed out people who are obviously living abroad. But it is a difficult situation when we have so many people like my daughter and her husband who work abroad in excess of 6 months but are paid in the UK. A lot of retired people are now living less than 6 months in the UK but also less than 4 months in any other country where do they stand.

That is right about the 181 days, I think, as far as the UK tax authorities are concerned, but doesn't this particular issue depend on how the particular insurance policy defines "resident"??

We would be amazed if any one on the forum has dual legal residence. In 7 years on the island Daddy has only encountered one client with this and he was Canadian / Spanish............, and of course this shouldn't be confused with "domicile" which is another bag of worms ( tax wise!)

Sorry Janet, we've just had an analysis of all the various companies health coverage sent to us and Sanitas still have the option to cancel your policy after 3 years.
