Will check my policy and get back to you, but they've just renewed ours and didn't cancel despite forking out the best part of 30,000 Euros.

Thats good to hear and long may it continue. It is only an option they have and they are unwilling to say when and why they would apply it.

Default Private Health Insurance

We are going to opt out of the private health insurance we currently have here in Tenerife (we are not British) as the company we have used for years is changing over to another insurer and with a different and much more expensive annual fee.

I have been looking at Sanitas online. Does anyone have any recommendations for other companies that give a good coverage for us permanent residents here on the island. There's just the two of us and we're not youngsters.
Thanks for any advice.

I was just looking at this yesterday. For a 45 year old man with Sanitas on basic cover it cost 35 euros for a woman of 42 years it cost nearly 50 euros. Why?

No idea. I thought it was purely age ... Jeremy's premium is double mine.

Sharon, I personally cannot fault Sanitas, and wouldn't recommend you look anywhere else. BUT, do you have private hospitals nearby? Check which they accept, because they might not accept all private insurance companies, and you don't want to end up with a policy from the very one that's no good for you locally.

It may be because ladies in general have a few more health issues as they get older, so the insurers get more money for us.

Sharon, we have recently changed some policies over to Arthur Lewis Insurance, a small family run business based in Los Gigantes, they have adapted a policy to fit our needs, were very helpful, very good prices too, no pressure selling, they will even give money back if you finish a policy early if it is possible. etc.

I understand they will even come out to you.
Maybe give them a call see what they can do for you ? 922 860 838 they deal with the major companies here

I found out that there was an offer with Sanitas, a couple of years ago.

the offer was : no 6 months waitingperiod
all the problems and/or diseases you have before taking the insurance are included in the insurance.
Wich to me sounded very good.

the only problem was that this offer was only available for Dutch people at the time.
I argued on the telephone that in fact this was discrimination and that if they put a product on the market, they cannot exclude you, based on your nationality.

It took me about 5 minutes and I got the insurance, only ment to be for dutch people and I´m happy with it for years already.

Cogesa-Sanitas

important

Women have their health problems earlier on in life (relatively) and then the men have theirs later (e.g.prostrate) and so they pay more when they are older.
Ring TIS on 922735672 who can sign you up to a Modular policy with DKV (which is more widely accepted here in Tenerife), so if you don't need some of the cover it can be excluded.

Arthur Lewis offer the same policy with DKV too, so you have a choice of broker.
