Default Private healthcare for ex-pats living in Tenerife

Have a word with Chris at Tenerife Insurance Services http://tenerifeinsurance.biz/ He came to see me in Palm Mar recently.

Really nice man and he offers DKV Medical Insurance.

Hope this helps!

We use Sanitas, and will post the details a bit later. There are several offices in the South of Tenerife, and often there will be someone there who speaks English, but there's a dedicated English line in Madrid.

Will post the telephone number later, and details of the policy too. What we like about ours is that it gives us BUPA cover if we are ill when visiting the UK.

I have got 2 quotes on the health insurance. The question I have now is 1 is higher than the other by about 25%. Sanitas are the most competitive but I know when it comes to health insurance this does not always mean its the the best value in the long run as the hidden little facts are usually well hidden.
Has anyone ever used the 2 of them and are able to compare them for me.

Feel free to move this mods but my searching did not find a specific thread on health insurance.

Thanks

Tom we're with Sanitas and I cannot fault them. They covered me for 30,000 € within three weeks of taking out the policy and have never quibbled.

EDIT> have just realized I promised to post details of Sanitas and didn't. Here they are.

There are local offices in various locations, but in the main holiday area, there is one down the side road between the Conquistador hotel and Parque Santiago 1. It's number is 922 753 603. Most of the offices can cope with English, but there's a dedicated English line in Madrid. Telephone is 902 400 232.

Thanks for that I have sent off for a third quote. I'll post on here a rough guide to the different prices so people will know in the future. The prices wont reflect though what each company offers though and that will have to be done by contacting the individual representatives so they can tell you.
It does seem that some give you things that others don't.

What are the best options if you are visiting for 3-4 months at a time and over 60
I know the European Heath Card covers emergencies but what about none emergency matters.

Golden Maniac is the one to answer this. My understanding, though, is that there is no alternative to private healthcare under such circumstances, whether that is provided by insurance or out of your own pocket.

You can pay to to see the English Dr. Karen Whittaker, in Los Cristianos, right by the Arona Gran hotel (along from the sunday market) 922 798 226 appointments.

As far as I know she does not do call outs or weekends, open from 9am - 1pm weekdays

She is registered to practice here, a very nice lady, a consultation is 30 ish Euros.

Most minor things can be treated via a pharmacy here to be honest, you can buy much here you cannot without prescription in the UK.

If it is more serious you have your health card.

I would recommend Sanitas if you wish to pay for private healthcare, they are 'Bupa' in the Uk, as Janet says they do not quibble, you can go direct to buy your policy so cutting out middle men fees, they speak English.

you can also go direct with DKV, who guarantee they will not cancell your policy no matter how much they have incurred, whereas other companies can and do, especially as things get tight financially these days.

Also, DKV agents cannot charge any extra - DKV rates are the same, but you can get a discount for 4 people (5%) or 5+(12%), group policies of 10+ and lower prices if you are self-employed. This last one is often overlooked, even by DKV agent!

At the end of the day, price is not the overriding issue - can you get cover in clinics and hospitals near where you live adn with DKV you do not pay upfront, the bills are passed to the company.
