| And this presumes too that you wouldn't have the required Certificado de Registro, which proves you've been living here, and if they could demonstrate you were living here without one ... Better to be fully straight with your paperwork. It's amazing how pleasant they can be too to people who are clearly legal, or making effort to be so. ![]()

| A friend of mine needs answer to a question (she has no internet) they have lived here a few years, have residencia and always driven on a UK license. They never had theirs inscripted or anything. They now plan to buy a car in the UK but also keep their car here (OK for some) so they can travel back and forth spending a few months in each country. Not sure if they own house in UK but will be renting in Tenerife. Now, even though they have never bothered before for some reason she wants to know if they need to do anything with licenses. Or are they are OK leaving things as they are and if stopped just tell police they live here some of time and in UK the rest of the time. |

| If they have residencia, then they can be demonstrated to live here ... at least as far as the police are concerned. The law is that they must exchange their UK licence for a Spanish one, or at the least have their UK licence inscribed. Now, the law isn't always enforced, but if you get stopped by a policeman who has an issue with it, he can fine you for not having either, and at this time of year, of course, they're out for fine money ..... A Spanish licence is fine to drive on in the UK. A UK licence is not, officially, fine to drive on here. From there on, it's their choice. ![]()

| I have residencia, and a spanish car - but I also maintain an english car in the UK, with my EU (UK) license. This has the valid UK address of my UK house. So do I need to inscribe or exchange?

| Yes you do, officially. The fact is that the law requiring you to exchange or inscribe is not much enforced here, BUT this does not mean it is not law. They can insist on you complying with the law any time they like. If you're resident here, then your UK address on your licence isn't actually valid, is it ..... ![]()

| But as a European, you are allowed to own a car in the UK, and drive there, whilst living here. The only question of validity for your UK car is taxes and insurance. You're also allowed to live here as a Brit/European. You are also allowed to drive your UK car on a Spanish licence. The only thing you're not allowed to do is drive a car in Spain on a UK licence.
