Question Driving in Tenerife on a UK licence

How long can you drive on a UK driving licence if you are non resident but come over to Tenerife for long periods?.

Depends what you mean by long periods. The law says that if you are resident here for six months or more, you must either inscribe your UK licence, or change it entirely for a Spanish one.

This is what the law says: there is evidence, though, that they have decided not to enforce it in the Canaries (or some police officers have anyway).

So how does it work if you get caught speeding in Tenerife with a UK licence?

A prickly issue

They can't match up the points, because the UK has a plus points system whereas we have a minus points system. In addition, different offences have different point allocations. So there is little they can do in reality.

They can and will fine you though, and if your licence isn't as it should be (i.e. living here more than 6 months still on a British licence) ... ouch.

Have a look HERE

Hence why IMHO it is better to keep your UK licence and have it endorsed with your NIE rather than surrender it for a Spanish one. They are less likely to bother with points for minor offences that would normally attract them.

There are two ways to look at this though, when i had my uk license here i was pulled for a routine check and they literally kept me there for a least an hour at the roadside looking for something they could get me on it was a nightmare. since changing to a spanish one i have been pulled three times for checks and they have just asked for my license and took a quick look and let me go with no hasstle, so i think it makes life easier to have a spanish one.

I must say that's my reasoning too.
