How much does it actually cost to live in Tenerife?
Having read an article HERE today about the rising cost of living on the mainland, it occurred to me that it would be very useful to have a thread on exactly how much it really costs to live here.
I know things are going up (though a bottle of gas will be going down in price soon), but what are those "things" exactly?
I can think of annual rates, community charge (if on a complex), electricity, water, bottled gas (sometimes), petrol and running costs, food, insurance (household and medical), entertainment (or eating out) ...
Can we start to put a thread together to inform those who might be trying to do their calculations??
that's an excellent idea, janet, and should be very useful for anybody considering moving here! after all, as a tourist on holiday here, you life a different life-style while here
annual rates etc. really depend on whether you own a place; if you rent, things like basura (rubbish collection tax) or community fees should be down to the owner, so aren't applicable
my 2cents worth re: eating out, which hubby and i do at least once a week: unless you eat in tourist places (i.e. as soon as you go away from las américas and most places in los cristianos), you can calculate about 30 euros for 2 people (bread for starters, 2 main courses, some water and a litre of wine), 40 euros tops (unless, of course, if you go to a posher place where it can be much more). so 120-160 euros a month (as i say, if you do this once a week), 1440-1920 euros per year (and doesn't this figure make you think twice?! it seems like a lot of money... then again, i couldn't imagine eating in 365 days a year)

The thing that I've noticed going up a lot recently is the cost of basics - for example, my usual brand of butter now costs over 2€ a pack. Fish, meat, veggies, bread, in fact most food had gone up a great deal whether you eat at home or eat our!
Will start to make a note of exactly what's what over the next couple of weeks. If I remember to that is

don't forget the average job income is 1000 euros a month... if you're single and maybe have a child as well, that's hardly enough if you have rent to pay!
