Default Are you moving to Tenerife?

If so, you will find loads of information here in all of the sections, but what if you can't find what you are looking for yet?

Stick a post on here and we will try to help you, we are sure to find someone here that will know the answer for you

What about those of you that have had a bad (or for that matter good experience during your move, or once you arrived here? Dont be shy, why not share it with us, it might help one of our members in the future.

Thanks

I think the number one piece of property advice I would give to anyone coming to Tenerife is rent before you buy.

We arrived on the island last May for a week's holiday before making the final move in September. During that initial stay we fell in love with a house and started the mortgage application process.

Our timing was bad as the fall out from the Northern Rock crisis meant it was becoming increasingly hard to secure a mortgage (not helped by the fact that we already have a pretty hefty one on our London property).

The upshot was that we were refused a loan and decided to continue renting instead.

Ironically we have come almost full circle in that we are renting on the same complex where we saw the house we wanted to buy. Judging by what we have subsequently discovered here about the workmanship and the general lack of attention to detail, I am SO glad we decided not to pursue our original plan.

Irrespective of anything else, it's also extremely important to live for a while in a particular area to see whether it suits.

That's great advice.

We rented ourselves when we first came here; not for long, but long enough to get to know a few areas, and to discover that some of our first choices would have been disastrous.

Take time and care before doing anything.

I think it is better to rent first as well to give you time to find the area that suits you most. It must be horrible if you buy somewhere and the people and the area are horrible. We nearly made that mistake, but luckily didn't go ahead.

Default Rent to Buy

Some people do offer a Rent To Buy contract, rare but they are available, so ask the estate agents or your landlord if he would consider this As the market is slowing it is a better option for both buyer and seller.
We hear The property Line on San Blas may have some (no we do not work for them).

looking back I would have rented instead of buying, but if I had it would have made it harder to have the dogs so it hasnt worked out too badly

debbie, chances are you'll have to come here and look for a job yourself. it's not customary here to offer a job to somebody who's not on the island, who hasn't been interviewed in person etc.
as for accommodation, why not put a thread in the accommodation wanted forum and ask what you're looking for, how much you can afford... a number of people here own property to rent out. but again, a lot of people book themselves into a hotel for a week before they get here and then look for a long let once they've arrived, so that they can see what they're booking.
