Default A Walk to Montana Negra

I am planning a walk to Montana Negra on Sunday 6th July. The walk starts from San Jose de los Llanos at 9.30 am. I know it's a bit early but as it's July, I thought it would be a good idea to get as much of the walk done before midday, if possible. To get to the start, drive through Santiago del Teide and head towards Erjos. When you reach a T junction, turn right and then look out for signs to the village. The signs actually say Los Llanos. As you reach the first houses, look out for wooden sign in the shape of a fish for the El Risco bar, fixed to a pole on the left. There is parking just beyond this. The scenery on the walk is breathtaking with superb views into the Santiago valley and of Teide and Pico Viejo. The highlight of the walk though is Montana Negra itself and the surrounding scenery. The huge black mountain is situated in a black-sand desert, which accentuates the colours of the pine trees and shrubs growing in it. This is where the 1706 eruption responsible for the destruction of Garachico originated and it really is an amazing landscape. The walk takes around 4.5 to 5 hours and is not overly strenuous although it is quite long at around 10 miles. Please let me know if you are interested in joining the walk.

This sounds great - daft question: is this a circular walk, and back at the start after that time?

Yes, it is a circular route, so we will return to the start point in San Jose de los Llanos. We usually then head for the nearest bar to cool down with a drink. arty15:

Also, if anyone lives around the Chayofa/Los Cristianos area and would like to join the walk but needs a lift, let me know. I can take up to four people.

Just back from Gran Canaria this afternoon. It looks as though there will be four definitely walking on Sunday, with the possibility of a fifth. See you all as arranged in Los Llanos.

I've just crawled back in from the walk to Montana Negra. Every bit of my body hurts except my fingers, so I am at least able to post a huge thanks to @Cyberhiker for arranging a fantastic walk in wonderful scenery. No doubt @torrenter will be able to post some piccies if he still has his camera with him.

Lots of photos. I'll get them sorted when my legs start working again.
