If you look at your nomina you will see an amount stating IRPF this will show the percentage and the amount you pay. If you have a mortgage and children you could get money back. I usually get about 600 euros a year back.

I believe you are responsible for submitting your own tax return even when on a contract. You can fill out the form yourself or ask a Gestor to do it for you (for a fee, of course). Your employer should have given you an end of year statement of your earnings & deductions which you submit, along with your claim for any deductions (mortgage, kids etc). There is a fine for late submission - think it is 150 euros - so get that return in.

It isn't just autonomos is it? My nomina this month has included the 200 € tax rebate

I'm getting a nice little refund from Hacienda too

that's correct, doreen. as an employee, you still have to do your own tax return. i think a gestoria charges something around 70€ for doing it on your behalf and that should be well worth the expense, considering the paperwork involved

If you are an employee and only work for one company and earn less than 22,000 euros a year, you do not have to declare. As far as I was aware the money coming back from the government is only for employees and not autonomos. Autonomos make profits, while employees earn wages - this is what the government said when they announced the rebate. Unless of course they have changed their minds.

No Karen, it seems autonomos too will get it - according to El Pais here
-¿Quiénes tienen derecho a los 400 euros?
-Para tener derecho a la deducción es necesario ser asalariado, pensionista o autónomo y tributar en el IRPF, al menos, por 400 euros

So am I correct in the following?

1. I dont legally have to declare because I dont earn more than 22.0000, (I wish)

2. It may be worth my while to do it anyway as I have a mortgage and child

3. I am too late to do this this year anyway

And another question, what happens if I havent paid enough and is that ever likely to be the case?

emskie, yes, it can happen that the government thinks you haven't paid enough tax and instead of getting anything back, you will have to pay more. that's a bummer, of course, but i think as an employee they deduct enough tax already off your contract for that not to happen unless you declare some ridiculous figures in other areas (mortgage etc.)
and yes, you're too late for it this year - unless, as janet, pointed out you'd like to pay a fine and still submit your tax return for this year...

I disagree here .... as you have a mortgage and child, you will be due some refund which will more than likely cancel out the 150 late filing fine ... and you will have to submit a return each year anyway, so you might as well start with the process now. If you have a partner working, the Gestor should be able to tell you whether you should submit separate returns or a joint return. It sounds as if it might be worth bringing your documents to a Gestor to take advice as to whether to submit a return ?
