If I bought a car in the mainland Spain, complete with Spanish plates, is it the same drama importing it here tax & matriculation wise or can I just bring it over, register it here at Santa Cruz & off I go, Euros saved from not buying here on the island ?
I ask, as our car we bought here in Tenerife has Espana plates & no TF prefix, it was new though. Must have been imported by the dealer, we did not pay any tax etc. Yes, someone else matriculated it, just cannot face Traffico !!

Princess, we all have España plates now - the TF, GC denominations went out when all of Spain moved to B, then C, now G reg.
Don't think you would be saving much money - are you looking to buy new or second hand?
I would be interested in this too Princess. I have seen a great website called Autoscout and there are lots of bargains on there, new and second hand. I saw a new jeep with 0kms for 10 grand cheaper than the same one here!! I would get someone to do the traffico bit for me too it a nightmare up there!!
Didn't know about the finish of the TF & GC type plates, thank you for that.
The prices here for instance German cars are appalling, importing one is a much cheaper option for me, as I have someone who can supply vehicles to Spain.
I just wondered if it was from the mainland would I have the Tax etc. still to pay on top?

I'm in the process of importing a second hand car from Germany - should be here in two weeks time ...well, I'm not doing it, Marcos, a super car dealer in Las Chafiras is doing it for me - he took my car as a trade in - offered me more than the BMW dealer where I bought it did 12 months ago!
I´m not sure what the tax situation is from the mainland - they have VAT, we have IGIC, which I think is 13 or 14% for cars - will check with Marcos & post here.
Interesting thing - on one of the import taxes you pay for cars brought in from outside of Spain (think it might be the 4% transfer tax) - 70% of it is refunded after a year if the forms are done in your name rather than the dealer's - Marcos pointed out to me, as I signed the form, that most dealers just pocket it.
I´ll post more on this when my car actually arrives and I can go through the paperwork ... but a quick answer from Marcos today is that he will be routing it through the mainland first where it will be registered and then brought to Tenerife ... the tax will thus be 11% - if it were brought directly from Germany to Tenerife, the tax take would be 28% (I have to admit that high amount surprised me)

This is something I have often wondered, could you easily buy a car in Spain and bring it to Tenerife without all the 'usual palaver' associated with importing cars into Tenerife?
