Default How to purchase / Sell a car here in Tenerife

Once we have all settled on where to live, the next thing is usually to buy a vehicle to get about in.

The paperwork is quite involved as 'Traffico ' the equivelent of DVLC I suppose have to receive certain paper work to register the car in your name, you can also check there that the vehicle does not have any debts registered on it such as outstanding HP, fines, unpaid tax etc. so it is vital to get this checked before making a purchase privately or if you are buying from a garage they will do it for you.

Perhaps someone can help with the tax you pay when you purchase a second hand vehicle here & what is involved.

Personally I would use someone to matriculate a vehicle as it is so complicated & time consuming.

Can anyone add more informative help to this thread rather than my sketchy outline

This is a copy of an info sheet I hand out to my clients:

CAR SALE DOCUMENTATION etc.
Seller

Copies of:
NIF
Or if non Spanish:
White NIE in date plus Passport if non resident OR certificado de registro plus passport OR old style plastic residencia IF still in date.

Original Ficha Technica (car log Book) THIS MUST have a current ITV stamp with at least 1 month’s life left.
Original Permiso de Conduccion matching the name of the documents provided by the seller above
Original paid receipt of current rodaje (road tax)

Buyer

Copies of:
NIF
Or if non Spanish:
White NIE in date plus Passport if non resident OR certificado de registro plus passport OR old style plastic residencia IF still in date.

CURRENT certificate of empadronamiento.

Both Parties must sign a Compraventa (Bill of Sale) DO NOT enter a price – we will telephone to get the book price of the car confirmed.
Signed application to transfer. Signed authority documents to act on buyer and seller’s behalf.

Be ready to pay transfer tax of 4% of book value of the car plus 44.20 for Trafico. plus 75 euros for my fees.

Advisable: get us to check on debts or embargos on the car. If there are any embargos you can not change it into your name.

make sure the certificado de empadronamiento are for trafico (they do differentiate now); last time i went the woman at the counter was a bit bitchy and didn't want to accept one that didn't say "trafico" on it

And I would pay this happily to avoid dealing with Trafico, and would ask Goldie to do it every time.

Without asking you to give any trade secrets away, is it straightforward to do this (or get it done), Goldie? Is it possible to be certain that there's nothing that's going to come and bite you some time down the road??

I agree

Many months down the line this is still a "Work in Progress" for me.

This is great info for some of the southern ayuntamientos but doesn't apply to Stgo del Teide for example - so find out if YOUR own ayuntamiento specifies a use for the certificate.

You can obtain the info from Trafico but I actually use an on line company who do me a complete credit and embargo check for 25 euros and deliver in 3 working days max, I normally add just 5 on top as I have to use my credit card. There are any number of credit check agencies out there or as I said you can get a report from Trafico if you prove your interest ie the compra venta.

Sorry I should have pointed out that if you are doing this on your own this 4% is paid at Hacienda not Trafico and you have to do it 1st

It is vital that the new owner does transfer the car into his/her name. You should employ someone like Goldenmaniac to do the transfer for the benefit of both the seller and the buyer. If you prime GM before the sale, she can tell the buyer what the total costs are, thus avoiding any problems.
