Is there any reason to present the paperwork well ahead of the date? Less chance of a missing/absent witness if one waits?

Not sure yet Doreen. Once the paperwork is all prepared you present it and they tell you how to proceed. Maybe it is only valid so long? I'll post to clarify when we find out for sure.

When we got married (a long time ago) I had to have my birth cert. authenticated by the Spanish consulate in London. I think it was about 5 quid and consisted of a rubber stamp, and about 20 spanish postage stamps stuck to the back. I had to have a cert. of baptism as well for the church ceremony.
We had to get married at the registry office first and 2 days later in church.
It was quit funny really. My wife took me to an office. There was some talking and I was told to sign some papers. Which I duly did. It took about 10 min. On the bus ride home I asked what had happened in the office as I wasn't sure. She just casually said "Oh we just got married" Strange but true!!!!

In the eyes of the family we weren't married until we left the church.

It is possible to marry anywhere in Tenerife, as we found out recently. All that's necessary is to pay a fee for the registrar to come out. The standard alternative is to marry in the Registry Office itself.

It's even possible to marry in the Santa Cruz Auditorium itself! There is a bit of controversy in some cultural quarters over whether it should be allowed there, but it is allowed. The fee to hire it for a wedding is €4.000 for a whole day, or €2.800 for a half day.

El Dia: possible to marry there
El Dia: controversy in some cultural quarters.
