it sounds like this could get quite complicated, so it might be good if they involved a company to sort everything out for them. i don't want to get too involved myself because already they come running with every tiny problem they have... when all i do is rent out apartments!
thanks for everybody's input!! you're great and have helped loads
Sorry CG just realised you said they were staying permanently. Normally the school will get things moving on an NIE from one of the parents or legal Guardians and worry about dotting the "i"'s afterwards, their priority after all is to make sure that the kids are schooled.

You can tell the family to mail or PM me if they want specific info on their case, or of course Janet or any of the other professionals

thank you, goldenmaniac! the couple have now returned to pick up their filled in forms (argh, i ought to charge people... the number of times i have done this here *rolls eyes*) and told them it might be best if they involved a company for sorting out the kids' paperwork. they will get their own certificados de registro sorted out and then see what can be done about the kids'.
they do not have any paperwork saying they were the children's legal guardians. apparently, social services were involved in the UK and they know they were moving abroad and were ok with it... it all sounds a bit weird to me, to be honest.

Default Nie

Has the system changed again?

My son (Simply Mo) and his girlfriend (Claranails) queued up this morning from 07:00 hrs to apply for her NIE number.

Once they got to the front of the queue they were told that it was now a joint application with Residencia and they needed to pay 9 Euro and they could now apply on line.

Is this true or do you think they may have misunderstood?

some people i know were given the form for the joint application, too... however, they then went back and said they only wanted the NIE no. for now, which they got. that was last month. i don't know if the system has changed but it would make sense to get both at the same time, no?

No it hasn't changed. If applicants do not have a NIE when they apply for a Registro, then they get one at the same time. It makes sense to do the two together if you are going to want both. Some only want the NIE, though, and others only want the Registro because they already have a NIE. Any of these is possible.

I was there this morning and I know they're running short of the modelos, so they're probably trying to get people to minimise the paperwork (surely not! ). I asked for six application forms and modelos, and got given six forms and four modelos ... when I said no, I need six of each, I got a scowl and a complaint that they were running low. I said that the extra two forms weren't much use without the modelos unless they'd be prepared to process them without ... so he reluctantly handed over the extra two.

You can't apply online ... he might have meant that the application forms are available online. But even then the modelos aren't ...

For EUROPEANS Lets break it down:

Stays of under 3 months at a time ie NON Resident but need an NIE number

form from here http://www.mir.es/SGACAVT/modelos/ex...anje/ex_14.pdf

carbonised modelo to pay government tax only available from National Police Station information desk: fee = 9 euros, tick box for asignacion de NIE - right hand column - pay in bank in advance
Result - White A4 paper showing NIE number available 4 working days after application

------------------------------------------------------------

Stays of OVER 3 months at a time up to indefinite ie Resident
form from here
http://www.mir.es/SGACAVT/modelos/ex...anje/ex_16.pdf

If you have a previous NIE number for any reason use it if not just use your Passport number (on the Tasa form as well)

carbonised modelo to pay government tax only available from National Police Station information desk: fee = 6 euros 80 cents tick box for certificado de registro-left hand column, pay in bank in advance
Result - Green A4 paper showing NIE number available immediately (Certificado de Registro )

----------------------------------------------------------
regarding shortage of modelos: new guy on information desk is very twitchy about handing out to us "professionals" Ask David on the desk that processes paperwork, he usually has a few spare.

Yes about that. It's 9€ for NIEs and 6.80€ for Registro.
