Bondy, I've moved your post to the NIE Questions and Answer thread, so have a good read back through. As it says in the first post, too, there is another thread HERE which is a pure information thread on how to apply for a NIE.

Good luck

Default N I E

Since getting my NIE many years ago I have now had two passport changes does this mean a new NIE or can it be ammended, and how important is it to do anything. There must be many people in the same position.

No, you don't need to do anything. Your NIE is valid permanently (I mean the number itself), and since it's an old certificate, that will be valid too. The change in passport numbers is irrelevant.

Default Y NIEs!

Confused, so were we, but NIE numbers now being issued begin with a Y, 'cos they ran out of Xs.

This means you may experience dificulty in getting anything from a company that uses Spanish computer software as most have not been updated to recognise a number with a Y.

Goldenmaniac posted about a month ago HERE that they were being issued, and HERE that there were some problems when processing them. It seems that it might be a solution if a 1 is placed instead of a preceding 0 like one used to have to do with the X numbers.

just to confirm: anybody with a new Y prefix NIE number - if a non government organisation is having problems processing your new "Y" number tell them to plug in as follows eg number is Y 00693450 B put in X10693450 B This functions. Government organisations allready know about this.

Default Extranjeros we've all got an X number haven't we?

As we all know if you are a foreigner here and register yourself you get an NIE number that starts with an X. Well Spain has run out of them and are now issuring people with Y numbers. I know this is awful, but my boss said to me I feel so sorry for them poor Bxxxxxds with one of those numbers!! I guess Tenerife is on the UP!!!!
