| I understand that an empadronamiento is required for a Registro regardless of whether one has an existing NIE or not.

| OK spoke to Officer David pretty much as I said Empadronamiento required for: Existing old style residencia holders renewing to green certificate of registro who have changed address from that on record at the extrangeria. New applications for green certificate whether in possesion of a previous white non resident's NIE or not. Apparently for a short period of time after the green certificate was brought in last year proof of address using utility bill, rental contract, letter from government department etc was acceptable, but that was done away with because it was more open to abuse and the requirement for empadronamiento was brought in as the only proof of address. There is at the moment a guy who is manning the information desk who worked on the "A" desk at that time, but in between has been processing Spanish passports - so he could be giving out misinformation as he knows it, or the person applying may have had an old information sheet and the officer decided to let them off as they were complying with the requirements printed at that time, or whoever was on duty just took pity on the person they were processing on that occasion. (Visual aid <<<<<< Imagine said info imparted with suitable Canarian shoulder shrugs at regular intervals) -------------------------------------------------- I would also just like to point out to any newbies that EACH ayuntamiento is slightly different - those of us who live in the sticks do not have a problem getting an empadronamiento with just a passport number. Guia de Isora doesn't charge pensioners for certs and charges others 1,80 Santiago del Teide charges everyone 2 euros. Adeje doesn't charge for the cert. but you have to tell them what its for and they print the reason on the certificate.and go back and tell them when you have your new NIE number. Arona lets you register and get a certificate on the same day if everything is in order. Santiago del teide and Guia de isora take 4 working days. I could go on and on ![]() The point of this diatribe is to advise peeps to CHECK YOUR OWN AYUNTAMIENTO'S REQUIREMENTS and check how YOUR OWN PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES fit into the immigration / health care / social security / taxation regs!!! and as someone else said remember the kitchen sink!!!!!

| Wow! my third client this am at the Las Americas Comisaría was issued a green certificado de registro containing an NIE number starting with a Y not an X the person before them got an X-99_____-W and she got a Y-003____-P. Scary huh? that's how many of us there are these days!!! Wonder who has the lowest number on the Tenerife forum? (OBVIOUSLY DON'T reproduce your proper number) has anyone got x and 6 digits and a letter or even 5 - fun to find out ![]()

| Clients with the new "Y" numbers are having problems with - as usual - the airlines when trying to obtain discounts, as the new Y numbers don't fit into their systems. I spoke to officer David about it who said that they shoud try plugging in a peceding 1 instead of a preceding 0 like one used to have to do with the X numbers - if any one has actually had any success with this could they let me know.
