Something very similar happened on a small Palm Mar forum recently - one post from new member decrying a company claiming he had been cheated and telling people never to use them. I happened to know one of the owners of the company & alerted her to it ... her side of the story was completely different and the administrator removed the post. My worry was that there had been 75 views already before that.

EDIT: Just to add, I am not against negative reviews, just the lack of knowledge as to who is making these very damaging statements.

Doreen I can see your point and agree with you to an extent. We have to give people the benefit of the doubt though. The Forum is very new so it stands to reason that some members will be very new too.

I'm pleased that some members have been able to post positive statements about the restaurant too. That provides a balance however be assured that the Mod team will discuss this thread and make a decision. We really only like to remove posts and threads where absolutely necessary and never do it lightly.

Yes, of course, Dude, I agree about the newness - it´s just too much of a coincidence for me that the first AND only post is such a negative one. No intro, nothing else, just this.

I am really grateful that you are allowing me debate this publicly, and would plead again for this offending post to be removed until the bona fides of the poster can be proved.

We can't do this Doreen, because anyone can review anything, there's no minimum post count required. I have edited the thread, I have removed the thumbs down icon, the restaurant has had several good reviews, and Dave has posted a warning at the top of the thread. I can't see that we could do any more to protect the forum, nor to avoid potential harm to a business.

Reviews will sometimes be negative, and there is no system in place for vetting reviewers, nor would I be happy if there were to be one.

The restaurant has now had many more people in this thread saying good things about it, and the title shows as any other review title. I don't see that we should be thinking about doing anything else, to be honest.

Okay, I know you are all doing your best to be fair and open and democratic and all that (maybe overdoing it as a reaction to past lives) ... I just have this gut feeling that this is a malicious piece from a one-post wonder and as such has no value to this forum, but is damaging to a presumably innocent business. You all know how I reacted to the one blow in intruder last week - it really is so off putting that I think all the disclaimers in the world will not undo the initial disgust on reading it.

And as I said, I saw this happen on another forum to one of our member´s business, that I won´t name, but have told Dude - and I will pm you now Janet, so perhaps you could take their views on board as to the unfairness of a single post from an unknown contributor who never returned to that forum.

Dave and I have now spoken to Angus directly about this, and his view is that reviews are only meaningful if negative reviews are allowed. In this particular case, as we know, this is a brand new member with a single post which is the negative review, so there is clearly the possibility that it is malicious.

Anyone reading this review should bear this in mind, and this post has been copied into the first post of the thread as well.

I think, in reality, the place in question has actually got more positive publicity from this thread than they could have paid for

People are now more aware of the restaurant, and can read that it is a one off 'negative' so are actually likley to go and give it a try next time they are out and about.

If it was a malicious posting, and time may tell, then it could be said to have back fired!
