Default Fires in Tenerife 2008.

There are reports of a fire on Tenerife between San Juan de la Rambla and Los Realejos this afternoon, which is now under control.

Canarias24Horas

Thought it was probably the right time to start a thread on this year's fires ... because there will almost certainly be more.

Fire broke out an hour ago in a barranco in La Orotava, in the area of La Torrita. Again some ... person ... burning stubble.

Will keep updated.

Canarias24Horas

EDIT> It appears that that area of La Orotava is near the Guardia Civil station and the La Orotava football field.

Fire broke out yesterday afternoon around 4pm in La Esperanza near La Laguna. It was brought under control fairly quickly, and only 1.5 hectares were affected.

The area affected was in the village of El Rosario, next to the La Esperanza road. Three helicopters were involved, along with fire services. The cause is still unknown.

Most of our walk yesterday was in burned and blackened forest (from last July's fires)

There are signs of regrowth, but progress is slow, as only the Canarian Pines are truly fireproof.

In time, al will regrow (see pic)

Question Controlled burning?

Driving between Adeje and Alcala last week we saw several small fires up on the hillside. A lot of smoke and some burning fiercely with flames a few feet high. Is this some sort of controlled burning? If so why and what?

One will have been ours!

You almost certainly saw the bonfires lit in honour of San Juan Bautista. The eve of the festival is Noche de San Juan, and it's when everyone has a bonfire. 23rd June.

There's a thread HERE.

Well I hope this is something or nothing, but we've just had the water helicopter fly straight overhead having collected water from the reservoir down near San Juan, and heading over us towards the forest up beyond Tijoco Alto, perhaps going up as far as Vilaflor.

Let's hope it's nothing ...
