A patera with 19 immigrants, 3 of whom might be minors, arrived at around 1pm yesterday at Arguineguín in Gran Canaria, after having been spotted about 9 miles to the south of Gran Canaria.

The Guardia Civil has caught 28 immigrants who arrived in a patera last night at the Costa Famara in lanzarote. The patera arrived at the coast under its own steam, and a call was received by the emergency services around 3.30am that it had landed. A search is continuing in case further immigrants are still at large. All those detained are in good health.

Have been unable to log on properly for a few days, so catching up .....

Monday 29 September: A boat with 29 immigrants on board, 13 of them minors, was intercepted at around 2am around 10 miles off the coast of Lanzarote. They arrived at the Costa Teguise an hour or so later. Four of the occupants needed slight medical attention, but otherwise, all were in good health.

Canarias24Horas

Monday 29 September: A cayuco with 230 on board was spotted 55 miles from Gran Canaria, and arrived at Los Cristianos around midnight. All were in good health, though some were taken to health centres with hypothermia. Among the 229 were 25 possible minors. The cayuco was spotted by plane during Monday afternoon. This is the largest number to arrive in one embarcation, with the previous largest number being the 172 immigrants who arrived in August 2006 at El Hierro. The numbers involved, and the size of the cayuco, have convinced the authorities that this is a Mafia shipment.

Tuesday 30 September: A cayuco with 96 on board, 3 of them minors, arrived at Playa de Pozo Izquierdo on Gran Canaria around 3.30 pm. At least one was transferred to the Vecindario medical facility for treatment.

There has been a noticeable absence of cayucos and pateras arriving at Canarian shores lately ... none in the news that I've seen since my last post above, 10 days ago now. There have been two or three stories, though, about boats picked up off the African coast, clearly en route to us, but they didn't even get close to our waters. Maybe the patrols are having effect at last ... or maybe we're just coming into rough water season ...

A patera carrying 24 immigrants was rescued today. There were 16 minors and a baby among them. They were picked up by lifeboats around 5 miles to the south of Arguineguín, in Gran Canaria, around 7am. All were found to be in good health.

A cayuco arrived at San Blas beach earlier today. At present, it is still not known how many immigrants were abord or their state of health. They arrived at the coast by their own means, but were met by emergency and Red Cross teams.

Canarias24Horas

EDIT: The cayuco which arrived at San Blas at 3.30pm today was carrying 69 immigrants. Two were taken away for medical attention suffering with hypothermia.

One of the two immigrants taken to hospital died around 3am this morning, poor soul.

Meanwhile others from the craft have been admitted to hospital.

A cayuco has been intercepted 44 miles to the south of Tenerife. At the moment it is not known how many are on board. It will be brought into Los Cristianos around lunchtime today.

Canarias24Horas

There were 110 on board, 6 of them possibly minors. All were apparently in good health, though 2 were taken to El Mojón hospital. The cayuco was spotted around 3.50 am 40 miles from Punta Rasca. It seems it left Gambia 10 days ago.

Default Re: Cayucos and pateras in the Canaries 2008

A cayuco with 93 immigrants on board, one of the dead, arrived at around 4.30 this afternoon at Arguineguín, Gran Canaria, after being spotted and intercepted an hour earlier 8 miles to the south of Gran Canaria.

The 93 is a provisional number, and the number of possible minors is still unknown. Five with various problems, particularly hypothermia, were taken to medical centres.
