55 immigrants, 9 of which were probably minors, arrived at San Sebastián de La Gomera on Monday. All were in good health though 4 were taken to hospital for treatment for hypothermia and dehydration.

They were dashed lucky as the sea here yesterday was very rough indeed

The National Police in Gran Canaria have detained the occupants of a vehicle carrying a group of immigrants who were still wet. It is suspected that the vehicle was involved in people smuggling.

At this moment, the driver and his principal passenger have been detained, together with at least four of the immigrants themselves, the remainder of which have hidden in the Castillo del Romeral greenhouses in the south-east of Gran Canaria.

The vehicle was stopped by a routine patrol in an area considered a "hot spot" for the arrival of pateras, and was triggered by the flight of the immigrants into the greenhouses upon seeing the police.

A cayuco with around 76 immigrants on board was intercepted about 40 miles to the south of Tenerife earlier today. Ten of the immigrants were in a bad way, and needed to be taken to various hospital centres by helicopter.

Did I read the other day that they estimate that 10,000 have been killed trying to make the crossing?

The authorities have 40 days to prove who the immigrants are and, especially, where they're from. If they can't determine absolutely where they are from, then they must be released. Those who say where they come from are sent back there, unless they're unaccompanied minors, in which case they can't be repatriated. It's said that children who come with their parents are told not to admit who their parents are ... that way, even if the parents are sent back, the children won't be. It must be heartbreaking.

They just don't know, A. Some say it's one in ten that sinks, others say that it's one in ten that doesn't. They haven't a clue, but the numbers are large, that's for sure.

It's now confirmed that there were 80 on board, of which 10 were transferred to various hospitals. It's thought that 9 of the 70 in good health might be minors.
