A cayuco carrying 65 immigrants, 6 of whom are likely to be minors, arrived at El Hierro at 5.30 today (Wednesday 18th). All were in good health, though one was taken to hospital for dehydration. The occupants told Guardia Civil officers that they had been at sea for 11 days.

Two further cayucos carrying some 121 immigrants arrived this Wednesday at Los Cristianos, after being rescued by the lifeguard services who were out looking for yet another boat, spotted 54 miles to the south of Tenerife, and which will probably now arrive in the early hours, having also been successfully intercepted.

The first of the two boats already brought into Los Cristianos was spotted 37 miles south of Tenerife, but the second got within 5 miles of the Tenerife coast before being intercepted.

Further details to follow.

A cayuco with 70 immigrants aboard has been escorted into Arguineguín harbour in Mogan, Gran Canaria. One of the immigrants was taken to a hospital centre with a high fever and an injury to one of his feet.

There is no further news of the cayuco that was spotted yesterday to the south of Tenerife, so it could be that the lifeboat services that went to attend failed to intercept it.

... still no further news on that cayuco spotted to the south of Tenerife, and as I said in the post above, it could be that it gave the authorities the slip. It could also be, however, that it sank, even being so close (relatively) to land.

We've wondered before on this thread how many fail to make it, and today comes news of at least 6 unfortunates who didn't. Mauritanian police discovered their bodies on the shore and are presuming that they died in the effort to get to the Canaries in such a boat.

The forensic team which examined the bodies alongside the Police said that the poor people died from the cold, thirst and hunger, and that they were probably in a boat which capsized in strong waves. God knows how many others were in the same boat ... and where their poor bodies are now.

It's not the first time that the Mauritanian police have found such bodies on their coastline, the maximum tally is, I think, 16, and on these other occasions too, have discovered evidence to demonstrate that they came from such cayucos.

A cayuco arrived at Los Cristianos this morning with 179 immigrants on board, 39 of which were possible minors. One of the immigrants has been taken to a hospital centre.

The cayuco was spotted at around 9.30 am, around 8 miles to the south of Tenerife. It arrived at harbour at 11.30.

Funny goings on, on our local beach La Pelada. El Medano.

A lot of plain clothes Policemen (well they were wearing black t-shirts) milling around, plus police cars. We were stopped by a police woman and told not to walk on the beach.

The Police are still down there. Maybe they are excepting some illegal immigrants..? or (just read Janet's post) searching for bodies..

I can't see anything in the press at the moment to explain this, but it doesn't sound great does it

Two cayucos carrying 138 immigrants between them have arrived at Puerto Rico and Mogán in Gran Canaria this morning. 34 of the 138 appear to be minors. Both craft reached shore without being intercepted at sea.

Another one with 50 aboard reached Maspalomas the south of Gran Canaria this afternoon, having been intercepted just 100 metres from shore.
