Most don't stay, though, Ol, they're processed and repatriated by Spain. There are now purpose-built retention centres and they're taken there, and if it can be established where they came from, they're returned on specially charted flights. The ones who stay are the ones who refuse to say where they came from ... and minors can't be repatriated unless their parents can be identified. Many parents, it seems, specifically don't acknowledge their children so that they get to stay even if the parents are returned.

A second cayuco arrived at Playa Santiago at around 10pm last night carrying 72 immigrants, of whom 7 are thought to be minors. They all seem in fair health, though two might yet be transferred to hospital.

Do they see it as a staging post to the UK? It seems to me children are a bargaining tool,no thought for the children,so selfishness is'nt only alive and kicking in the UK.Of course I suppose any life is better than the life they have where they come from.

No they see it as a staging post to EUROPE! Most don't want to go to the UK but to France or Spain proper because these are often the languages they speak.

From the parents' perspective, of course, they are being anything but selfish with their children, because denying their relationship means that although they might get repatriated themselves, their children will get to stay, and get the best shot at a new life. It must be heartbreaking, Ol!

A cayuco with 56 on board arrived at El Hierro around 8am this morning. All of the immigrants were male adults, and five were taken to hospital for dehydration.

A cayuco with 60 immigrants on board has arrived at Los Cristianos. All are apparently in good health. It was spotted 40 miles or so to the south of Tenerife at around 10pm yesterday evening.

Canarias24Horas

Updated information ...

the boat was escorted into Los Cristianos at 9.30 this morning, carrying 61, not 60, immigrants, of whom 11 (maybe 12) are minors. They have been taken to the Las Americas Police Station from where they will be sent to retention centres for processing.

A cayuco arrived at Playa de Troya at 7am this morning carrying 66 immigrants.

Details still sketchy, so information on their state of health and whether there were minors is still unavailable.

A cayuco carrying 84 immigrants, two of them women and one a little girl, has been intercepted 64 miles south of Tenerife, and is expected to reach Los Cristianos around 8am tomorrow morning (Saturday). Two of the immigrants have been removed by helicopter for medical attention for hypothermia and injuries.

Canarias24Horas

UPDATE
The 82 immigrants have now arrived at Los Cristianos aboard a rescue ship.
