There have been a few boats arriving over the last few weeks so I thought we'd have a News thread on it, to try to keep our own records on the numbers arriving. With the new frontier controls, there should be fewer than in previous years. Hopefully there will be fewer deaths if there are fewer boats, anyway.

For the moment, one was spotted today about an hour ago about two miles off the coast of Las Galletas. It's not known at this moment how many were on board.

The cayuco was escorted to Los Cristianos where they are presently disembarking and receiving emergency services assistance.

And a second one, 49 miles south of the Canaries, heading to Tenerife.

The first one is now confirmed as having 66 males on board, 10 of them possibly minors.

During @cyberhiker's walk, we came across these Gardia Civil mobile radar vans just west of Las Galletas.

Presumably part of the new measures to intercept cayucos.

A Cayuco was escorted into Los Cristianos harbour at approx 3.30pm this afternoon and many of the people onboard needed help to walk and appeared to be in a poor state.

That'll be the one from post one. The second one sighted turned out not to be a cayuco at all according to the press, but a fishing boat.

Another was, however, escorted into Gran Canaria at around 9pm last night, though, with 49 on board, five of them in a bad state, two of which needed to be taken to hospital immediately. Five of the 49 are thought to be minors.

Those who are thought to be minors are submitted to an "orthopedic examination" to determine their age ... I have no idea what forms the basis of these tests.

Another cayuco was escorted into Los Cristianos last night at around 1 am. It was intercepted 24 miles to the south of the Canaries having first been sighted 60 miles to the south by airborne monitoring. A woman and 14 possible minors were among the 59 occupants brought into Los Cristianos by a Rescue vessel out of Gran Canaria, and one of those disembarking was taken to El Mojón hospital for what was apparently a quite routine illness.

it is possible to determine age to within a couple of years through the examination of teeth and gum development. this is being done to ensure those claiming to be minors are in fact minors.

where I go running up the top of Los cris. on Friday they put one of these boats up there ( waiting to be destroyed ? ), yesterday there was 3 !! Pitiful sight the rags and dirt. How these people ever get in one of these things is beyond me, I would not get in one in a swimming pool.

22 immigrants arrived at Lanzarote in a patera over the weekend, were treated for minor injuries and cold by Red Cross teams, but were otherwise in a good state of health.

68 immigrants, including 5 suspected minors, were rescued today from a cayuco spotted by a pleasure craft one kilometre to the south of Maspalomas, Gran Canaria. Two of the immigrants had unfortunately already died during the voyage, and a third was transferred to a hospital centre in a serious condition where he died a few hours later. Another two are still seriously ill in hospital.
