Heatwave alert in Tenerife and the Canaries weekend of 26-30 June 2008.
There is a Government pre-alert for a heatwave beginning tomorrow morning and lasting throughout the weekend. Temperatures are forecast of up to 34º in central and south Tenerife, and also throughout the Canaries, not including La Palma and El Hierro.
There is also a ban on fires and BBQs in forest recreation areas while the alert continues. Also banned are agricultural fires and fireworks in areas near vegetation. The bans might be continued into next week depending on prevailing conditions. Bans report HERE.
For obvious fire-prevention reasons, the Cabildo has asked people to avoid the mountain areas as far as possible while the alert continues. For equally obvious reasons, people are also asked to take the usual precautions for their own health and safety.
With the heatwave lasting longer than expected, the Tenerife Cabildo has extended the bans on fires in forest recreational areas, agricultural fires and fireworks in areas near vegetation.
Although conditions have improved, they remain difficult at over 700 metres above sea level. This is expected to pass in the next few days, but while present, it naturally creates an increased risk of forest fires.
Although not banned, the Cabildo is also maintaining its request for people to avoid mountain areas while this alert continues.
With the passing of the heatwave, the Cabildo has lifted its ban on fires in the forest recreational centres, and on agricultural fires and fireworks.
