The University Hospital (HUC) in Santa Cruz has been designated one of the best six hospitals in Spain in the list of the Top Twenty Centres of Excellence out of 155 evaluated. The ranking, assessed by independent auditors, was based on results achieved in 2008 in hospitals ranging across the whole of Spain, with HUC in the category of medical centres with over 574 beds and with three or more specialities, e.g. cardiac and neurosurgery, and kidney transplants.

For the director of the hospital, Ignacio López Puech, having been among the nominees has given HUC a recognition for the good work developed by all the professionals who work there, and placed the hospital at the top of list in the Canaries, and one of the the best centres of excellence in the whole of Spain.
