The Canaries, a region with the highest frequency of diabetes in Spain, leads the nation in kidney transplants, and has now reached the historic figure of 2,000 thanks to the increase in donors throughout the islands.
It seems that virtually every patient in the Canaries on dialysis is now able to take advantage of the option for transplant, and only those who are at increased risk from surgical intervention or immunosuppression are excluded from consideration.
There is also an association of Tenerife Renal Patients (Associación de Enfermos Renales de Tenerife, or ERTE). Apart from social and medical support, the association runs information campaigns and campaigns to boost donation ... which have clearly worked. It is also open to anyone with renal problems whether or not they are officially a member of the association, whose number of members now runs around 600.
What a great thing for the Canaries to lead the way in!
They've been at the top for a few years now. I'm not sure if its Candelaria or the University hospital there...think University, the one with the helipad at the front.

Apparently they are now world leaders, with Canarias the greatest number of transplants per head of population ... 72 per million, 12 points ahead of countries like the USA.
That really is an achievement. On a much lighter (ish) note, since we have been living here I have suffered from four very painful kidney infections, (no it is not due to the alcohol !! lol )
My doctor explained that many many more people suffer kidney infections here because of the hot weather and not drinking enough water. I always thought I drank enough water but her advice is, because of these constant infections, is to try and drink at least 8 pints a day and a daily drink of Cranberry Juice. Hope I haven't gone off thread here, sorry if I have

No you haven't at all! It's a very interesting point. I wonder if it's actually to do with the fact that we drink more water, not less, but that the water is so very very hard ...

I had a problem drinking tapwater, since the water is filtered by the lava rocks it contains excessive mineral and salt. The water is not bad, it is just to strong for us.
When you start buying bottled water, also for cooking, it did help me.
