The Canarian Government's President, Paulino Rivero, announced yesterday that "while Spain is studying what to do, we have already done this, because we began work at the end of last year, when all the indications were pointing to an unfavourable economic situation".
Rivero said that the greatest concerns of the Canarian Government were the same as the people, namely the economic crisis and the impact this has on the most vulnerable in society, and above all the vulnerable themselves and the unemployed.
Employment, he said, is the backbone that knits society together, and the signs are not encouraging at this time.
The Government is working, he said, at a series of measures to attack the crisis, and is passing laws as appropriate to facilitate these measures. These steps include the 30% subsidisation of fuel tax for taxi and lorry drivers, farmers and the fishing industry, and an income tax discount for anyone with a mortgage bearing interest under 30,000€, to be effective next year.
There will also be an important packet of measures, Rivero indicated, aimed at revitalising the housing market, especially VPO properties, because this not only provides jobs, but also helps preserve building promoters.
There will also be help with water and electricity payments for families who are suffering the worst economic difficulties.
Further measures will include laws over the next few days to revitalise the tourism sector, which will allow certain small projects to proceed with paperwork following later.
