A lot of these homes that one can see clinging to the coast line are second homes inherited from grand parents and so on , not all but quite a lot. But in my mind that does not defend the actions of the authorities.
There was a TV program last night about official abuse by politicians and the rich and famous. One of the articles was about a member or the government who, as I type is having a luxury villa built virtually on the beach! on the peninsular somewhere.

I don't know much about the law in Spain but one thing for sure it's not for the defense of the public.

I don't agree with this either... from what I saw, the town actually looked quite nice (and permanent). At the very least it has 60 years of history behind it. That's a fair bit for an Australian anyway hehehe... ;-)

I think there are several other monstrosities that should be demolished well before this -namely the shanty town in San Andrés. While there are a lot of boats, etc, there's a bunch of makeshift houses right on a public beach - it was a real mess when I went about 4 or 5 months ago.

Also, there are at least 3 or 4 high-rise apartment buildings just a bit up from the Guardia Civil in La Orotava. No where near the coast, but ugly as hell and just shouldn't be there. They're practically empty!

That's awful. What was illegal about these places? Does it apply to other villages dotted about the coast?

Plenty would like to know, Gandalf.

The village is clearly right on the coast, and that does contravene laws requiring buildings to be a certain distance from the sea (the distance has changed over the years), but there are plenty other of these buildings, so why Cho Vito ... that's the question being asked. Many think it is because it's an entire village, so it gets the point across more effectively than isolated dwellings.

The latest, today, is that the Canarian Government is complaining that the Dept of Costas in Madrid is "obsessed with Tenerife", that the Dept of Costas has confirmed it will "continue the demolition of Cho Vito", and that 41 people are still living there awaiting the demolition of their homes and hoping to get new accommodation.

Moreover, "Asamblea por Tenerife" is holding the three main parties (PSOE, CC and PP) responsible for the demolition of Cho Vito, some for being its promotors and others for behaving like interested accomplices. They are demanding that these politicians replace these demolished dwellings.

To quote them:
Quote:

In the face of this abuse of power, we call all citizens to attend a protest meeting in the Las Caletillas beach, next to Cho Vito, this Saturday at midday, 12pm.

The disproportionate use of repressive measures on behalf of the Government is only the latest step in a chain of decisions which have their origin in the Dept of the Environment and in the coastal demarcation, while the Presidents of the Government of the Canaries and of the Cabildo of Tenerife were looking the other way.

We condemn that all the guarantees and rights established in the Constitution of 1978 have been suspended in Candelaria, as well as the grave coercion which tens of citizens have been subject to at the hands of agents and forces of the state, who have selected from a list who can and who cannot go into this coastal village without any judicial order supporting the decision to impede the free transit through the area.
It goes on quite a bit, in the same vein, and concludes with another call to the meeting this Saturday, at midday.

Over 500 people attended the meeting today to support the residents of Cho Vito and to condemn the "abuse of power" which saw 21 of the 31 houses demolished in the last week.

The meeting passed peacefully, with just a few minor incidents. Posters hung from the walls with "give us back our houses, our life", "capitalism is destroying our territory", and "Cho Vito is as legal as the rest of the coast".

I'm hoping Pelinor will give us some feedback if he went today.

Well you tried!

... as did those who went, though as always, one suspects that the main effect will be to make them feel better for at least doing something. I doubt it will make any other difference ... damn them!

Well, the first is probably futile, but the second is certainly expensive, so clearly the second is preferred because women like certainty.

what are the laws on the coast line ? I've read 6 meters belong to government , the next 100 to the local council and can not be built on , but going by that half of tenerife would have to be pulled down? anyone know ?
