The Canarian High Court (TSJC:
Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Canarias) has presented its 2007 report, and it proposes the investigation of organized crime gangs.
The report says that organized crime operates with a "business mentality", which makes it very difficult to crack. The greater part of the groups involved in Tenerife are centred in the south of the island, which has an impact on the workload particularly of the Courts of Arona and Granadilla.
There are three types of criminal organizations: Rumanians, Algerians, and Albanian-Kosovans. Rumanians primarily engage in credit card fraud, and Algerians in robbery, especially with violence and intimidation (though this has lessened of late). Albanian-Kosovans tend to rent hotel rooms or apartments with fake identities in order to avoid detection as they engage in serial crimes against property and violent robbery.
The report stated that the Guardia Civil's Organized Crime Team has 25 agents: 12 in the eastern islands, and 13 in the Tenerife province. They form an important resource in the fight against organized crime.
