The European Space Agency's "Lunar Robot Project" has carried out tests in the crater of Teide
Within the last few days, the European Space Agency (ESA) has tested lunar robots on Teide. The robots are being investigated for ability to get around the lunar landscape and extract material for analysis, and particularly to look for evidence of water. Eight separate robots have been selected for study, from designs submitted by Universities in Germany, Switzerland, Finland, UK, Italy and Spain.
Teide was chosen because of its similarity with the lunar terrain. The machines collected stones and earth from the side of the walls of one of the craters within the main cańadas of Teide.

I doubt if this was the only criterion. When I worked there, by far the most important criterion was the social aspect of the location. Most software contracts were awarded to Danish companies, because the staff overseeing the contracts could go there on a regular basis, with nothing else to do of an evening except visit the sex clubs.

Ah away with you ... it was just on the news and you saw it! The machines need to cope with a terrain that's very similar to that on Teide, except that they say the lunar earth is finer, in the sense of not being as coarse.

The German robot has won ESA's Lunar Robot Project challenge ... at least in the Teide stage. The victorious robot, designed by students from the University of Bremen, is called Cesar, and it was the only robot which successfully completed its mission.
The Bremen robot is a light three-wheeled device, containing a system with a booster to permit video transmission and maintain communications betwen the vehicle and the base station.
