UFO sightings over Tenerife and the Canaries: Files are declassified by the Government and Armed Forces.
OK before we start, I'm just translating a news article here ......
The Ministry of Defence has declassified an official 84-page military report about events on the night of 24 November 1974 when various sightings of UFOs (Ovnis = Objeto Volante No Identificado) were reported in the Canaries. These started around 7.30pm when an Air Force lieutenant colonel and his daughter saw a very bright white light in the sky while they were driving in Gran Canaria. The light left a short trail, moved at very high speed, and disappeared a few seconds later.
According to the specialist Ovni investigator, Vicente Juan Ballester, "just 15 minutes later, an Iberia Fokker-27 took off from Tenerife for Gran Canaria. The night was clear and the plane was flying over some clouds as it was rising to its flight level of 2,100 metres. About 300 metres immediately in front of them, the pilots saw a powerful light which seemed to be approaching them head on, in a flight lane normally used by air traffic from Gran Canaria.
The pilot radioed the control tower to inform them that they were encountering traffic from Gran Canaria, but the tower responded that there was no such traffic at that point in time. The radar operator couldn't see anything on his screen that could account for this light, which the crew could still see and which was immobile to the east of the aircraft for a minute longer.
At 8.20pm, military radar, now on alfa alert, detected an uncontrolled echo from the north-northeast which was closing at around 900 kilometres an hour on the military installation W-8, where several military personnel saw a light in the sky which was stationary, but rotating.
Ten minutes later, at 8.30pm, the radar station registered a trace 67 kilometres away: this was another Iberia flight heading for Tenerife from Madrid. At the same time, however, an anomalous echo was registered 85 kilometres away also flying south. When this second trace reached 78 kilometres distance, the echo trace stopped in its tracks until it matched with the location of the Iberia flight. Immediately afterwards, the unknown trace evaporated suddenly. According to flight journals, there was no air traffic around other than the Iberia flight at that time.
DECLASSIFIED FILES:
Between 1992 and 1997 Spain declassified a total of 75 files containing around 1,900 pages, about Ovni sightings registered since 1962. The files contained a total 97 distinct events, among them cases similar to those reported from the UK this week (what is this talking about????)
According to military sources, now that they are declassified, the files are available for consultation at the Air Force HQ library, and are presently in the Air Force Historical Archive in Villaviciosa de Odón (Madrid).
Among these documents, there are cases of Ovni sightings by commercial and military airline pilots, as well as naval captains. These are similar to the case published today in the UK of an Alitalia plane which nearly collided with an Ovni in 1991 (ah!).
The Spanish declassification process began when the Flight Security Section, responsible for these archives, made the proposal to the chiefs of staff in May 1991. In 1992, the first files were declassified by the Ministry of Defence. Final agreement between state and armed forces was reached in 1996.

No no, it's a genuine news report on old files that are now declassified ....
Jack, the Spanish version of April Fool's Day is December 28th, called Dia de los Santos Inocentes ... instead of shouting April Fool when a joke is revealed, they shout "Inocente"!
It's something to do with the story of Herod and the killing of the babies shortly after Jesus' birth. He failed to kill Jesus, the innocent, so the "joke" was on him.

What's striking about these are the professional level reports ... these are trained observers, and people who know about flying things too.
I still believe that it could be something to do the the MOD . As Macbee points out, all the sightings before the super fighter planes in the US proved to be the American Government and after all, Tenerife does has an affiliation with NASA

Thanks Janet, I'm going to Dude's place on 28th December for payback
Fascinating stuff though UFO's. We were sat on our terrace each night last week looking up and trying to spot something in the sky Unfortunately, because of where we are in Tenerife, the Space Station was the only thing we could see (apart from a few stars)
