Default Garajonay Express announces the suspension of its service between Valle Gran Rey, Playa Santiago, San Sebastián and Tenerife due to the current economic crisis

Garajonay Express has announced the suspension from Monday of its service between Valle Gran Rey, Playa Santiago, San Sebastián de La Gomera and Tenerife. The company said that it was taking the decision in the face of the impossibility of maintaining the provision with the means available to it, because the route was loss-making, and causing serious economic damage to the company despite the efforts in maintaining the service over the last few months.

The company expressed its regrets for any trouble or inconvenience its decision caused, but said that present circumstances made the decision inevitable.

The company has dismantled its offices and left more than 40 employees in a legal limbo since it hasn't formally dismissed them.

The Gomera authorities are very concerned about this, since the island's tourism is already suffering, and there is the very real issue of the quality of life of the island's residents too. The plight of the company's employees just adds to the misery, especially with the closure of the office there which gives the impression that the company has just evaporated.

The company had tried to take the boat to Italy, since it's an Italian registered company, but the boat has been sequestered and remains in Tenerife while serious noises are made about the 180,000€ Canarian financing that was made to the company for the service.

What a mess.

The press are reporting that it can leave for Italy now and that the company's not done anything wrong ... basically the message for La Gomera is "deal with it" ...

difficult.
